Relief and Revelation
 by Fëanor

  • Despite much incredulity and many nasty responses from the commenters on Digg, this study linking a particular virus with weight gain sounds pretty convincing. As the researcher himself points out, "I am not saying that all obesity is caused by viruses. Obesity has multiple causes and viruses may be one of those causes." If they can track down the exact mechanism involved, they may even be able to make a vaccine for the virus. Still obviously no replacement for a good diet and regular exercise, but it would probably be a big help to people for whom even those things aren't enough.

  • This is great - a 256 MB USB flash drive wristband. It's particularly attractive to me because I'm running out of space on my hard drives at home. Plus, the black one would totally go with my black iPod. Also, I don't want to be a name-dropper here or anything, but this article was written by Star Foster, that famous new media writer that I know and am friends with and stuff. Hee hee.

  • I'm not familiar with Paul Pope's work, but after reading this article about him and his upcoming four-issue graphic novel Batman: Year 100 (the first issue's coming out this month), I'd say I'm definitely interested in getting familiar with it. The guy's a friend and student of Frank Miller, for one, and his new Batman book is set in a totalitarian 2039 where the Caped Crusader fights the dirty cops of a police state America. Fantastic. Where does the line start?

  • More ridiculous and awesome retro videogame paraphernalia via Joystiq. This time it's keychains, each featuring an appropriately pixelated representation of a characters from a famous old NES game, as well as a tiny replica of a NES controller that plays a sound from that game when you press the "A" button. So cool!

  • This is pretty fantastic - spell with Flickr! Just enter any word or phrase and this page will spell it out with pictures from Flickr. Very clever and fun. (Via Digg)

  • For some reason, whenever I come across some ridiculous hand-made fanboy creation, I have to pass it on to you folks, so here you go: a gingerbread AT-AT. Because for a geek to just make a gingerbread house would have been boring. Unless it was, like, the house they hide out in in Night of the Living Dead or something.
