So I was kind of excited to see that a big-screen, Hollywood adaptation of Jack the Giant Slayer was in the works. But I should have figured that in the process of creating such a thing, they would have added all the typical big-screen, Hollywood trappings to the story. Corny catch-phrases, lame love story, overwhelmingly huge action set pieces, bombastic rhyming prophecies, tons of special effects. Oy. This trailer is just gross.

• I really love the sweet and funny Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown, so it's pretty cool that he's doing a sequel called Vader's Little Princess. There are even holiday-themed downloads!


• I never got into Lemony Snicket, but I've heard great things, and we do have a book we really like written and illustrated by Jon Klassen, so I'm curious about this book that the two of them are collaborating on, The Dark.


• I'm fascinated by devices like this for some reason: a lamp that tells you the weather by recreating it inside your house. (No, it will not actually make it rain.)


• Andrew W.K. has been named the U.S. cultural ambassador to Bahrain. FYI. So they will be partying hard there soon, I assume. UPDATE: Somebody somewhere apparently realized this was kind of a crazy idea and cancelled the whole thing. The world is a sadder place now.


• Ironically, the most frustrating thing about watching this collection of the craziest fake ads from movies is all the real ads stuck in between.

The logo even slowly builds up line by line, just like in Alien! And yeah, I'm still not sure about how the dwarfs look in The Hobbit, but that trailer is pretty great. When they start singing the song at the end? Chills!


• Dude, a LEGO Zelda would be amazing.


• How about some Princess Leia hair bun headphone covers? I'd wear those.


• The cover for Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Century: 2009, the final installment of the "Century" trilogy. It's coming in June, 2012. I only read the first entry in this trilogy, and wasn't that impressed, but I still have a fondness for the series as a whole. And anyway, it's a great cover. (Via)


• Some news on the cast of the upcoming Ender's Game movie, the biggest item being that Colonel Hyram Graff will be played by Harrison Ford. (Via)


• New evidence suggests that children start forming solid memories as early as two years of age. So we only have a few months before we have to really start worrying about scarring our son for life? Good to know.

• You can listen to The Decemberists' new album, The King Is Dead, in its entirety on NPR. As the folks in the band have said in interviews, this album is a departure for them - simpler, more straightforward; not an epic concept album, just a collection of songs. As a result, I'm not as excited about it as I was about their more recent releases, but it's still good music.


• Yay! A hilarious new edition of Hark! A Vagrant!


• A visual history of Daft Punk's costumes. Daft Punk's cameo in Tron Legacy was one of my favorite scenes.


• You may have heard Pixar is doing a short film set in the Toy Story universe, centering on Barbie and Ken. The plot has been revealed.


• Watch polar bears attack and destroy the high tech spy cameras sent to film them.


• A 1991 Mexican Alka-Seltzer commercial directed by Guillermo Del Toro - it features a werewolf, naturally.


• Neil Gaiman offers a very fine New Year's benediction.


• Awesome Christmas card by Nick Edwards, featuring Santa riding a dinosaur and firing a laser cannon.


• Pac-Man's cameo in Tron, revealed!

• I haven't had time to watch all these, but mostly I just like the concept: all the greatest scenes where someone talks a computer into self-destructing.


• The early reviews of Green Hornet seem to agree that it's a flawed mess, but also fun.


• This story about two guys who broke into 50 Cent's place just to hang out and drink some of his booze is pretty fantastic, although A.V. Club makes sure to keep it real at the end.


• The blog formerly known as Cinematical lists 12 totally random reasons Jeff Bridges is awesome.
