Christian Huskey on "Book Report - The Epic of Gilgamesh" by Fëanor

Christian Huskey

Hey there! I was looking for a picture of a jewish carpenter that may look more like the real Jesus of Nazareth and not the American-caucasion version...and somehow I found your pic...click on the link and I find a long list of photos with short biographies attached. So I read yours, found it interesting and clicked the link to this page. I just wanted to mention something you probably already know, but it stood out to me as I was reading your review on the Epic of Gilgamesh. The character Gilgamesh isn't so different from that of King David in the Bible...As you probably are aware of, the story of David starts out pretty well with David being annointed as king of Israel at a very young age, becoming a hero and saving his people by defeating the giant, Goliath. There's also some adventure to his story as he is hunted down by king Saul for becoming a supposed threat to his reign.
You mentioned that the story of Gilgamesh seemed a bit "schizophrenic" to you because the story begins by praising him, but then continues on to recount all his failures...
I'm just wondering if you can't see the parallel here... David's life starts out pretty well, but he falls into sin as king over Israel. He has relations with Uriah's wife, Bathsheba, she becomes pregnant, and then David goes on to arrange Uriah's death on the battle field...Yet even though David commits this horrendous evil, God still singles him out as "a man after (His) own heart".
You're Jewish from what I know..I believe in having a personal, saving relationship with Jesus Christ. But I don't think either of us, even though our beliefs differ, would describe God as schizophrenic..and yet I see the way God narrates the history of the Jewish people in the Bible as being quite similar to the way the author narrates The Epic of Gilgamesh (based on how you described the book, because I have never personally read it). The story of the Bible starts out with God creating the heavens and the earth..breathing life into humanity..and placing Adam and Eve in a perfect environment...they had the beginnings of a wonderful and noble life, yet, like Gilgamesh, they, like the rest of humanity to follow, are more notable for their failures than for any success they may attain.

Let me know what you think..I'd love to hear your comments!

I agree that Ponyo was visually stunning and a moving story. However, one thing about it really bugged me. At the end, the children are asked to make a choice that will make it so that Ponyo is no longer magical, but entirely human. What bugged me is that it was not a difficult choice at all. They're all like, "OK!" It should have been a bigger deal than that!

I know what you mean, but I was okay with that. I think the point was that Sosuke's choice was a foregone conclusion, and it was always going to be simple for him, because that's just the way he felt, and really we already knew that from everything that had come before. His actions up to that point had already made the choice, so the actual making of the choice was just a formality.

But yeah, one does get the feeling sometimes that Miyazaki isn't very interested in endings. The ending of Howl's Moving Castle is so abrupt it's ridiculous. All the conflicts are suddenly resolved and the credits pop up almost before the last scene is over.

It's not a bad novel, certainly, but Gaiman isn't at his best in long form — he's a vastly superior short story writer, and the strengths of his novels are also his weaknesses. He gets by on ideas and imagery rather than substance and writing skill, but sometimes he gets so bogged down in ideas (great ideas, fun ideas, often original ideas, granted) it weighs down his narrative. American Gods is probably his best novel (unless you count Good Omens, but that's a collaboration so it doesn't count), but it still suffers from his stylistic shortcomings.

I think my friend William said it best: "What a great concept. A road novel with modern versions of ancient gods. Imagine if [the book] had been written by a really good novelist instead of a comic book writer."

(I remember enjoying Look to Windward too, but that was years ago when my tastes were different so I can't speak to how it holds up now.)

But The Name of the Wind is ludicrously overrated; the writer spends the first three quarters of the book making a bunch of promises and the last quarter proving himself unable to keep them.
Yep! In multiple continuities, but the most recent incarnation was the Earth-3 version, leader of the Crime Society of America by... Grant Morrison, I think? Superman was called Ultraman, an astronaut who got infected with some solar-powered alien virus. His wife was evil Lois Lane as Super Woman. Owlman was Thomas Wayne Jr., who lost his parents and older brother Bruce in a tragic accident. Green Lantern was Power Ring, whose ring was a sentient schizophrenic bastard. Flash was called... Johnny Quick, but his schtick was that he had to shoot up with super-amphetamines to get access to the speed force.

It was great. Ultraman would randomly annihilate people from his satellite with his heat vision. Owlman and Super Woman were conducting an affair behind Ultraman's back that he knew about but couldn't prove. I highly recommend picking up the various trades.

The "heroes" of the world included Alexander Luthor, The Jokester and Three Face.

He can't travel to one minute in the future and then turn around and drive back. But of course Doc Brown & co. can do exactly that: presumably the 2015 that they travel to is one where Marty and Jennifer already went to the future but returned without incident.

The scene with Mrs. Weasley and the boggart might just be my favorite in the whole series (perhaps second to the start of the Molly vs. Bellatrix battle)- but you knew that.

I love the contrast between Harry and Neville, and don't think it's at all coincidence, in light of the prophecy, that in a concrete way it is Neville who actually allows Voldemort to be truly defeated in the end.

Setting up Snape to kill Dumbledore becomes fully clear at the very end, but I actually never had a problem with it. I was in the Trust Snape camp from the beginning, for the simple reason that if Dumbledore had truly thought Snape was not fully on his side he never, ever, would have said "Please."

John Harris on "Book Report - Boy in Darkness and Other Stories and Mervyn Peake: Writings & Drawings" by Fëanor

John Harris

Boy In Darkness is shockingly bleak. A vile nightmare in a chasm in cold metal. Strange and isolated. It tightens down like a weight on the neck.

I have never encountered an atmosphere like it. An aching loneliness that gets under the ribs. Stifling remoteness.

This book must be read all at once, preferably in one day, otherwise the cloaking atmosphere is easily lost. A break in the rhythm is disastrous.

What a mind Mervyn Peake must have had. His imagination was seemingly limitless. He was an intensely lonely individual. Utter isolation inside his own head. That loneliness seems to have found its way inside of this book. There is a desolation here that is painful like claws.

Boy In Darkness is Mervyn Peake's exploration of the horror of being alone. Of the terror of the animal taking over the human. Of the fear of being hidden away in some vast, bleak, silent land, where a monster of silence awaits to crush out your life.

This is an existential novel of the finest purity. By the time you finish reading it, you will have been somewhere else entirely. Not in your world. If find such abstraction beautiful. Like cold mathematics in words. And the the language of it all is imaculate. Mervyn Peake's icy prose in all its glory in the shadows.

What an achievement.
