"Also, I assume this means Caprica is dead in the water, which is sad."

No, not necessarily. Ron Moore was only the show-runner for Caprica for the first few episodes, and handed over day-to-day control to Jane Espenson (who herself dropped out of the position in order to write more, so they brought in another guy whose name escapes me). I think when Caprica was in development, RDM was still hoping to get Virtuality off the ground, so he never intended to be in charge in a really hands-on fashion.

Yeah. The weird thing is that they extended the cast contracts to November (which effectively postpones the decision re: a second season until then), but the second half of the season won't air until next January. So it's not really clear what they're waiting for, since by the time their own self-imposed deadline arrives they won't have any new ratings information to base their decision off of.

Now, I'm not super-optimistic about a second season (and to be honest, I felt like the show fell off after episode five or so), but certainly SyFy clearly _wants_ to pick up the series but hasn't decided whether or not it's a good idea.

Back in 1940 at the dawn of the comic book they eviently thought that stories about a lumberjack were a good idea!

These tales exist primarily as an excuse for Hanks to draw page after page of guys beating the hell out of each other. An obsessive myopic brute, himself, Fletcher Hanks has been described by R. Crumb as, "A twisted dude". He's right.

And thanks for putting together these amazing books, and bringing Fletcher Hanks' work back into the light.

You're right, I didn't talk enough about Big Red McLane! The lumberjack genre has been sadly neglected in modern comics. I was fascinated by how Red's story took an odd new turn in this book, with him gaining a girlfriend and starting in on a boxing career.

If R. Crumb calls you twisted, you've got problems. :)

Yep! In multiple continuities, but the most recent incarnation was the Earth-3 version, leader of the Crime Society of America by... Grant Morrison, I think? Superman was called Ultraman, an astronaut who got infected with some solar-powered alien virus. His wife was evil Lois Lane as Super Woman. Owlman was Thomas Wayne Jr., who lost his parents and older brother Bruce in a tragic accident. Green Lantern was Power Ring, whose ring was a sentient schizophrenic bastard. Flash was called... Johnny Quick, but his schtick was that he had to shoot up with super-amphetamines to get access to the speed force.

It was great. Ultraman would randomly annihilate people from his satellite with his heat vision. Owlman and Super Woman were conducting an affair behind Ultraman's back that he knew about but couldn't prove. I highly recommend picking up the various trades.

The "heroes" of the world included Alexander Luthor, The Jokester and Three Face.

Has Loeb ever written any comics that you like?
Not that I know of, no. I've pretty much decided to avoid anything he's written from here on out.

Also, what do you have against Zatanna?
She goes around in a goofy magician's outfit, and all her spells are just regular sentences spoken backwards. She just seems really lame to me. Of course, it's quite possible I just haven't read the right comic about her yet. I don't think I've come across her character very often, and when I have, she may have been written by somebody I don't like (I'm feeling like it's probably Marv Wolfman's fault). So who knows, maybe she'll win me over at some point in the future.

Nope, I have not read any other Bat Lash stories. It's quite possible that the bit with the spitting of a guy's name in rage was a trademark of the series, but that doesn't make it any less of an ancient, melodramatic cliche that I'm certain predates the comic. It was almost a year ago that I looked at this comic (and I think I've since given it away), so I don't even remember what Severin's art looks like, but I highly doubt I'm the only person on Earth who doesn't like it.
Morph has a really complicated history. He used to be called Changeling, and was a minor hero-turned-villain shapeshifting telepath that was killed off pretty early in continuity — the late 60s / early 70s, IIRC. He was brought back in the... early 90's, I think, as part of a hilariously-named villain team "X-humed" (theme: dead former X-men turned evil) and has been bumming around ever since. Problem is, DC created a character named Changeling between when he died and when he was resurrected (the DC version is now called Beast Boy), and the rights to the name exist in a sort of limbo. I think DC technically owns them, but they don't use it anymore, and neither does Marvel.

So since they can't use the name Changeling anymore, he became Morph when they brought him into the TV cartoon continuity as a major recurring character. That made him popular, so he's appeared in a bunch of alternate continuities in the comics. I know he's a major character in Exiles.

I think maybe at one point he was supposed to be Mystique's son? I don't know if that was ever official continuity or a red herring or a What If or what, though.

They did wind up doing one really cool thing in the Superman/Aliens crossover. Superman got impregnated with an alien chestburster, one which would have all of his kryptonian powers and all. I don't remember where the story went from there, but I do remember it being fun.

Also, I'm glad that you're enjoying Planetary as much as you are. It's likely one of my favourite works from Ellis, and Cassaday's art has never been better. It probably goes without saying, but I do have the entire run up to current if you'd like to borrow it while hunting down the remaining trades. I could also throw the Ellis run of the Authority into the pile if need be.

Terror Inc.? Really? They're bringing Terror back? Wow, I really think that's a bad idea. Terror was perfect for that late-80s/early-90s grim-and-gritty antihero craze, you know, full of psychopathic tough desperate loners with nothing to lose, who were the best at what they did and what they did ain't pretty -- you know, when Todd McFarlane was the cutting edge of cool. But I like to think that tastes (and the market) have grown up a bit since then.

I mean, seriously, this is the pitch on Terror: "He's a hitman. No, wait, he's an undead hitman! That dismembers his victims! And uses their body parts for his own! Because he's rotting! And also... also part-demon! Gnarly! And he has poison spikes growing out of his face! His face! Yeah! That's sexy!"

Maybe if they did something like what Ennis did with Punisher in "Welcome Back Frank"... You'll have to let me know how it is.

Good list of stuff, Feanor. I'm so happy that you're getting in to comics, and even happier that you're really taking the plunge into the deep end.

I've gotta agree with your decision to pick up Iron Fist. Fraction and Brubaker are killing it on that comic every month. If you odn't mind me putting some more stuff uner your nose, go out and pick up the first collection of Criminal right the hell now. It's great stuff, in a different vein, but from the same writer.

Conan was really good at the beginning, but what little I've read since Truman took over hasn't really cpativated me.

Morrsion's work on Superman and Batman is superlative. Quitely is amazing on All-Star, but I'm not a big fan of Kubert over on Bats. It's still a fun read, nonetheless.

As for Doctor Strange; the Oath is really frigging great. Outside of that you'd be hard pressed to find a recent comic with him in it that's any good. New Avengers has been alright, but Leinel Yu's inerpretation of him just doesn't look right, and Bendis hasn't done much with the character yet. If you like Vaughan's work on Doctor Strange I'd also recommend his book Runaways. Fun, dark, fantastic book about the children of MarvelU supervillains. I'd also recommend Ex Machina, but I know you already have some of that in your collection.

Everyone must read 300. It is an example book in the purest sense. You can put it in someone's hands and say "this is what comic books are capabe of doing", and they would want more comics as soon as they were done reading it. Would I steer you wrong?

Plus, reading it before the movie comes out makes you very cool.

And Jim, I'll habe a neat little pile of books for you tomorrow night.

Mike: Thanks for the recommendations, and for the promise of metal at movie night. Very exciting. I thought about a greatest hits collection, but even though I own a number of those for other bands, I actually kind of don't like them in general. Usually if I get one, and I end up liking the band, I want to get all their albums anyway, which means I end up buying all the songs on the greatest hits album on other albums, and the greatest hits album turns out to be a superfluous waste of money. And yet, it was that album that let me know I liked the band in the first place. It's kind of a catch-22...
