Thanks for the kind words about my Fletcher Hanks book.

I believe that one of the pleasures of the second volume which you did not mention is the heavy dose of stories featuring Big Red McLane...the lumberjack. Back in 1940 at the dawn of the comic book they eviently thought that stories about a lumberjack were a good idea!

These tales exist primarily as an excuse for Hanks to draw page after page of guys beating the hell out of each other. An obsessive myopic brute, himself, Fletcher Hanks has been described by R. Crumb as, "A twisted dude". He's right.

Wow, thanks for commenting! And thanks for putting together these amazing books, and bringing Fletcher Hanks' work back into the light.

You're right, I didn't talk enough about Big Red McLane! The lumberjack genre has been sadly neglected in modern comics. I was fascinated by how Red's story took an odd new turn in this book, with him gaining a girlfriend and starting in on a boxing career.

If R. Crumb calls you twisted, you've got problems. :)

Has Loeb ever written any comics that you like?
Not that I know of, no. I've pretty much decided to avoid anything he's written from here on out.

Also, what do you have against Zatanna?
She goes around in a goofy magician's outfit, and all her spells are just regular sentences spoken backwards. She just seems really lame to me. Of course, it's quite possible I just haven't read the right comic about her yet. I don't think I've come across her character very often, and when I have, she may have been written by somebody I don't like (I'm feeling like it's probably Marv Wolfman's fault). So who knows, maybe she'll win me over at some point in the future.

Nope, I have not read any other Bat Lash stories. It's quite possible that the bit with the spitting of a guy's name in rage was a trademark of the series, but that doesn't make it any less of an ancient, melodramatic cliche that I'm certain predates the comic. It was almost a year ago that I looked at this comic (and I think I've since given it away), so I don't even remember what Severin's art looks like, but I highly doubt I'm the only person on Earth who doesn't like it. Thanks for commenting, though, whoever you are!

You've obviously never read any other Bat Lash stories, that panels "featuring a close-up on a character as that character clenches his fists and/or teeth in rage and spits out the name of his enemy" was a trademark of the original series.
Morph has a really complicated history. He used to be called Changeling, and was a minor hero-turned-villain shapeshifting telepath that was killed off pretty early in continuity — the late 60s / early 70s, IIRC. He was brought back in the... early 90's, I think, as part of a hilariously-named villain team "X-humed" (theme: dead former X-men turned evil) and has been bumming around ever since. Problem is, DC created a character named Changeling between when he died and when he was resurrected (the DC version is now called Beast Boy), and the rights to the name exist in a sort of limbo. I think DC technically owns them, but they don't use it anymore, and neither does Marvel.

So since they can't use the name Changeling anymore, he became Morph when they brought him into the TV cartoon continuity as a major recurring character. That made him popular, so he's appeared in a bunch of alternate continuities in the comics. I know he's a major character in Exiles.

I think maybe at one point he was supposed to be Mystique's son? I don't know if that was ever official continuity or a red herring or a What If or what, though.

They did wind up doing one really cool thing in the Superman/Aliens crossover. Superman got impregnated with an alien chestburster, one which would have all of his kryptonian powers and all. I don't remember where the story went from there, but I do remember it being fun.

Also, I'm glad that you're enjoying Planetary as much as you are. It's likely one of my favourite works from Ellis, and Cassaday's art has never been better. It probably goes without saying, but I do have the entire run up to current if you'd like to borrow it while hunting down the remaining trades. I could also throw the Ellis run of the Authority into the pile if need be.

Michael: Wow, that's crazy about the Aliens/Superman thing. Interesting...

I definitely appreciate your offer on Planetary and Authority - you are a gentleman and a scholar. I might take you up on it, but we'll see what treasures my trip to the store tonight yields. :)

I read the first couple issues of the new Authority series, then stopped because it wasn't grabbing me, but no, I never read the original Authority books.

I think I heard about these crossovers of which you speak back before I knew what Planetary was. I will definitely have to track them down now.

Thanks for the recs.

Wait, have you read The Authority yet? If you haven't, read it after Planetary. Also, check out the Planetary / Batman crossover (Night on Earth) and the Planetary / JLA crossover (Terra Occulta?).
I think the two might be combined in to one TPB called Crossing Worlds, but I don't recall for sure.

Also, Byrne is a love-him-or-hate-him kind of guy. Ask Jill about his four years on Wonder Woman sometime.
