• Check out the trailer for The Witches of Oz, a sort of sequel to The Wizard of Oz in which an adult Dorothy discovers the popular books were based on her own true adventures as a child and that Oz is now invading our own world. The movie looks a bit cheesy, but the cast includes Christopher Lloyd, Sean Astin, Lance Henriksen, Billy Boyd, and Jeffrey Combs. It's not the only Oz movie on the way, either; Sam Mendes will direct a prequel to The Wizard of Oz entitled Oz the Great and Powerful, and Robert Downey Jr. might play the Wizard.


• A rather amusing, slightly spoilery Serenity web comic. It helps that it references a classic Warner Bros. cartoon.


• Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast of Lars von Trier's upcoming sci-fi disaster movie, Melancholia. I hope she knows what she's getting into!


• Darth Vader makes a cameo on a condom. Apparently he's saying, "I will not be your father!" Heh.

• Most of the movie sites I read have picked up this rumor, so it seems possible it might actually be true, despite the fact that it came to light on April Fool's Day: Sebastian Stan has been cast as Bucky Barnes in Captain America. I don't know the guy, really, but he looks right for the part, at least. And Ed Brubaker approves! (UPDATE: Yep, that's official.)


• In case you didn't read about this when I tweeted it, all of Joss Whedon's shows (Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, Firefly, Dr. Horrible) are now available for immediate viewing on Netflix Watch Instantly.


• In this new clip from Kick-Ass, Nic Cage's character totally ruins a whole room full of gangsters. It's pretty awesome. The brutal, machine gun editing is a little distracting, though.

• Heh. Check out this trailer for the vampire comedy Suck. It's about a struggling band who discover that vampirism is their ticket to stardom, but then decide it may be too high a price to pay. • Warner Bros. is looking at fast-tracking one of two Wizard of Oz remake projects. The first has Todd MacFarlane attached as a producer, a script by A History of Violence scribe Josh Olson, and a plot that features Dorothy's granddaughter travelling to Oz to fight evil. I've thought about that and I've decided the proper response is "ugh." The other is called Oz and there are fewer details on that project, except that the writer worked on Shrek Forever After.

• If you hadn't heard yet, Patton Oswalt is writing a Firefly one-shot comic about Wash. It should hit shelves on June 2nd.

• Disney has cleverly turned its monorails into Tron light cycles.


• An interesting talk with Christopher Nolan about the third Batman and the new Superman. He provides very few plot details, but it's still fascinating to see where he's coming from and the process he uses. I'm both intrigued and frustrated by his insistence that Batman and Superman exist in their own worlds separate from any other heroes. I see where he's coming from, but... those characters have interacted almost from the beginning in the comics. And how awesome would it be to see them team up in a big-budget movie?? Answer: so awesome.


• Weird details from Jesse Ventura about a film shoot he participated in with Arianna Huffington and the Wachowskis (who are really not brothers anymore, as one of them is now a woman, and people need to stop calling them that).


• Horrifying! Real personalized ads, like those in Minority Report, are on the way. On the one hand, it might be nice to see only ads for products that are actually likely to interest you. But on the other hand... ew.

I've been meaning to say thank you to whoever signed me up for hyperspace on starwars.com. So, thank you! I haven't had a chance to check it out too much, but I'm hoping to see some cool stuff on the web cam, or something.

Of course, it's possible I signed myself up and totally forgot about it. In which case, thank you, me! But I really don't think my occasional fits of amnesia have gotten that bad yet.

In other news, I finally got around to watching the first episode of Joss Whedon's short-lived sci-fi show "Firefly" last night (thank you, Netflix!). Peccable told me it wasn't very good, but I think it's quite cool. Maybe the low expectations helped, or maybe it's just because I give movies and TV shows more of the benefit of the doubt than Peccable does.

Anyhow, now I'm sorry I didn't watch "Firefly" when it was actually on live, real TV. I think I'd say that it definitely starts off at a higher quality than "Farscape" (which I've been watching via Netflix, too, and I'm still waiting for it to get really good). The characters are interesting, the dialogue is good, the story ocassionally takes some unexpected twists. And the whole sort of style and look is rather different and fascinating. Ocassionally the characters will use odd slang or drop into Chinese. I like that. I like the sense of a history behind everything that we don't know about. It's part of what makes the Star Wars universe so intriguing. The show also sort of goes back to Gene Roddenberry's original conception of "Star Trek," making even more literal use of his metaphor of the outer reaches of space as American Western frontier. There are cowboys and horses and gun fights and showdowns and all kinds of stuff like that. But in space! And in the future! Yay!

Anyway, I'm not saying it's the greatest thing ever, but it's decent, and I'm going to keep watching it. I mean, it's certainly better than that crappy "CSI" show. Why the hell is that thing popular? It's brainless, predictable, totally unimaginative, and completely unbelievable.

But tonight is movie night, and that's cool.

Btw, did you know that if you enter any woman's name into Google's image search, you will always get back at least one picture of a naked or mostly-naked lady? Providing you have SafeSearch turned off, of course.

You probably shouldn't test this theory at work, though.

UPDATE: I meant, just on the first page, you'll find at least one. But actually it looks like this is true of just about any word you search for, let alone women's names. So basically, the internet has a lot of porn on it. I guess this wasn't that exciting a discovery, huh?
