I Hate Comcast
 by Fëanor

Comcast, or, as I like to call them, Cocmast, has the worst customer service I have ever experienced in any interaction I've ever had with any company of any kind. I won't go into the whole long story of the many ways in which they've screwed me in the past. I'm just going to tell you how they did it to me this time.

I stupidly let them rope me into one of those three-month promotional deals where you get digital cable and cable internet and pay less for them than usual. I never intended to keep digital cable, because it costs way too much for the amount of time I'd spend watching it, and it's not really that much better than regular cable. So when the three months were coming to an end, I decided to call early to get the digital cable cancelled, just to make sure that I wouldn't ever be charged the full amount. And this time I thought I was being all smart and I got the name, phone number, extension, and supervisor of the guy I talked to, so if it turned out he was lying to me (and nine out of ten people that you talk to at Cocmast lie to you, so there was a pretty good chance), I could nail him. Well, the conversation goes well, it sounds like everything is taken care of. He tells me exactly what my bill is going to be. He turns off my digital cable early, which I wasn't totally expecting, but what the hell, I didn't care that much about it. I return the box with no problems.

Then today I get my bill. It's way more than he said it was going to be.

Apparently, they charge you extra or something for changing service mid-month. I don't know that for sure, but the bill says something about "partial month" next to some numbers. Bills from companies like this are never very forthcoming in explanations of their various fees and charges.

Now, I could try to call and straighten this out. But here's why instead of doing that I've already written the check and put it in the envelope: It wouldn't do any good. I'd spend an hour or so on the phone talking to them, getting more and more angry as they put me on hold and switched me to different people, and ultimately they would just tell me that that's the way things work and there's nothing they can do, and have a nice day!

Not to mention the fact that, since my cell phone is a Philadelphia number, and they route you to the "correct" office via your phone number, I have to get them to transfer me to the New Jersey office every single time I call, which takes a good fifteen minutes. And every time I try to get them to give me a direct number to the New Jersey office, it's the wrong number, or I end up redirected to the Philly office anyway somehow.

If you are considering getting a cable and/or internet provider, steer clear of Cocmast if at all possible. Get satellite TV and DSL instead if you have to. I would switch myself, except I can just imagine what a huge hassle that would be. No, at this point, I am pretty much resigned to my fate.

God, I hate Comcast.
