I Did It - Sort Of
 by Fëanor

I wrote over 50,000 words of a novel this month, and thus I've won NaNoWriMo 2009. It's pretty exciting, but also a bit of a letdown. Because I'm not really done yet, you see! The novel isn't finished. In fact, I figure I'm probably not even halfway. I'm currently calling the book Doors to Other Places, and I'm going to keep working on it whenever I get the chance. I'm pretty proud of what I've done so far, and I really want to get to the end eventually.

The experience was an exciting, exhilarating, and exhausting one. I highly recommend it to anybody who has ever wanted to write a novel and just hasn't had the time. You're never going to have the time! So just give yourself an insane deadline and do it. It feels amazing.

(UPDATE: I should point out, it is extremely helpful to have a supportive and understanding partner during the process. I couldn't have made it through without poppy.)

Update
 by Fëanor

I don't want to jinx myself, and I'm still afraid I might hit a wall later because there are so many parts of the novel I haven't planned out yet, but so far Nanowrimo is going pretty well. I'm having a ton of fun, and I've been overshooting my 2,000 words-a-day quota every day. I'm over a fifth of the way to the Nanowrimo goal of 50,000 words, and only about a ninth of the way through my outline, so I'm in good shape! Speaking of the outline, I thought I had the first section planned out pretty well, but characters and scenes I hadn't envisioned at all are popping up out of nowhere. The characters are taking on a weird life of their own, and demanding to do things and say things I didn't want or expect them to do or say. It's an exciting feeling. It's also exciting to look back at the stuff I've written and think, "Hey, this isn't utter crap! In fact, that bit is pretty funny!" Maybe I won't feel that way when I look back at it in a month or so, but we'll see.

Anyway, I wanted to send a special message to fans of the blog (all two of you): if you're not following me on Twitter, you might want to do that! I haven't had time for many full-length blog posts here, but I have been posting to my Twitter feed even more frequently than usual lately - recycling links, reviewing comics, and making other random observations. You might like it!

Okay, enough disgusting self-promotion. Gotta get back to work. Later!

Blogging in November
 by Fëanor

Just wanted to let everybody know, I'm participating in National Novel Writing Month in November, which means I'm going to write a 50,000 word novel between November 1st and November 30th. There's no way I'll be able to keep up all my regular blogging on top of all the other writing and work I'll have to do, so I'm afraid you can expect little from me here for the next 30 days besides NaNoWriMo updates and maybe the occasional Hulk Thought.

If you're taking part in NaNoWriMo as well and would like to be my buddy, my username is Feanor1138.

I have to say, although I'm a little scared, I'm also really excited. It's been a long time since I took on a long prose project like this, and I forgot how thrilling it could be. Two things I'm really worried about: being struck by writer's block halfway through, and not being able to keep myself from getting mired down in lots of editing and rewriting. I'm used to starting each new writing session by rereading what I wrote last time and tweaking it, but there's no way I'll be able to do that and still keep up the necessary pace of about 2,000 words a day. I need to force myself to just get it down and move on!

Anyway, it should be interesting! I might stay up until after midnight tonight so I can get started as early as possible.
