They're selling the pilot of this show, which was to be a spin-off from "Smallville," on iTunes, so I bought it. I would recommend that you not do so. It's pretty bad. It does have Ving Rhames, but that really doesn't so much elevate the proceedings as make you wonder what the hell happened to Ving Rhames. Also, as may not be surprising, they're doing a "Smallville" kind of thing with the show, so they never call the guy Aquaman, and he never suits up or anything. He's just a young kid discovering that he has strange abilities and a strange past. They don't concentrate much at all on the communicating with fish thing, and instead go with this idea that he can swim really fast and has super-strength - but only when wet. Is this from the comic? Because it's a pretty funny idea to me. It makes for great scenes where he gets tied up and can't escape because...he needs a glass of water! Once he dumps one on his head, he's able to easily free himself and Ving Rhames from their bonds. That's pretty funny stuff.
Anyway, the only interesting thing about this show would be if it does well and then becomes, not a new TV show, but a kind of video podcast show that's broadcast exclusively on the iTunes Music Store. If it were any good, that's where I'd watch it anyway, so I kind of like the idea of content moving there. It's not really all that cheap to watch a show that way, but it's way more convenient for me to download it and watch it whenever I want than trying to remember to tape a show when it's on, and then trying to remember to watch the tape the next time I'm at a VCR and have the time. |
