On the Viewer - Battlestar Galactica (Season 4.5, Episode 9 - "Daybreak Part 1")
 by Fëanor

Huh. No new material before the opening credits. It's all "previously on Galactica" stuff. And no jumble of preview images after the opening credits, either. They're taking things slow and easy now...

We're jumping back in time: Caprica City, before the fall. Adama pissed at having to do something he feels is beneath him (I assume it has to do with speaking on the Galactica, the event where everything starts). Baltar and Six in a limo! Baltar gets a weird call, demands someone wait or he'll sue them for abandonment. Roslin at her little sister's baby shower. It's interesting seeing everybody and everything before it all went wrong. It's so much like our world, now.

Starbuck and Apollo meeting for the first time. It looks at first like Apollo and Starbuck are on a blind date, but it's just Apollo coming to meet his brother and his brother's new girlfriend at their apartment.

Turns out the call Baltar got was from the live-in nurse he hired for his senile old father. She was leaving because the father stabbed her! Baltar's Dad reveals Baltar changed his accent to hide his heritage - his father is blue collar working class, apparently used to work on a farm. Baltar has to send Six away and spend the evening looking after his Dad, whom he clearly despises.

Roslin gets horrible news. Her sisters and her father were all killed in an accident; they were sideswiped by a drunk driver. Even in the past everything sucked!

Cut back to the present. It's tough for a lot of people, taking Galactica apart.

Baltar's imaginary Six tells him the end times are approaching. "Humanity's final chapter is about to be written. You will be its author." Wow. That's not something you really want to hear.

Back in the past again. Baltar arriving home with a brunette, but Six is there waiting for him. He tries to throw her out, then she reveals she's found the perfect place for Baltar's Dad to live, and has already had him moved there. She treats Baltar's Dad better than Baltar does!

Back in the present, Starbuck is trying to turn the song into a mathematical equation.

The Chief is in prison. Apparently he confessed to helping Boomer? And Helo seems to have actually forgiven him for it! Although the Chief hasn't forgiven himself. And I guaran-fracking-tee you Athena hasn't! Chief says, machines are not people. Of Helo's wife he says, "She's a blow-up doll, Karl. They all are." Ouch! Isn't he forgetting that he is also a machine? He says the Eights are all the same. You can't trust any of them. Gotta say, I think he's right about that. Never trust an Eight!

Hera is writing whole symphonies now! But the Cavil and his Cylons have yet to figure out that the dots she's drawing correspond to musical notes.

Cavil says of Hera: "She's a half-human, half-machine object of curiosity that holds the key to our continued existence somewhere in her genetic code. So let's get a tube in her and get her ready." Ha! He's such a scumbag.

Hotdog is carrying a bunch of the photos of the lost. Many of them are being left behind because no one remembers who they are anymore. The people who knew them have also died. That's pretty brutal. There are the lost, and then there are the utterly lost. Of course Adama has to go check this out. Hera's picture is there. Adama's about to walk away, then turns back and takes the picture.

Starbuck: "I don't know what I am."
Adama: "I know what you are. You're my daughter. Don't forget it."
He's such an old softy.

Wow! An Anders flashback! I think this is the first one of these ever! It's back when he was a sports star. He's being interviewed in the locker room. He says for him pyramid is all about moments of perfection.

Apollo has Baltar's number. He accuses Baltar of never having made one truly selfless act in his entire life. Gaius Baltar has only ever acted in the best interests of Gaius Baltar.

Baltar: "My people can't get representation because I personally haven't passed Lee Adama's selfless altruism test. I haven't been goody-goody and worn a badge of honor."
Lee: "I don't think you've passed Gaius Baltar's test. Go ahead, look me in the eye and tell me about the time you made a truly heroic act of conscience which helped you not even in the slightest. Tell me, I'll even believe you!"
Baltar: "You're right. I wouldn't trust me either."

Starbuck and Adama got the location of The Colony out of Anders somehow (how??), and now they're planning a rescue operation to get Hera back.

Helo is still convinced they can get Hera back and this can all turn out all right. Athena, not so much.

The Hera mission is volunteer only, and Adama wants everyone to come down to the hangar deck and personally say yay or nay to joining. They have to stand on one side or the other of a line on the deck to show whether they want to go or not. It's a very dramatic moment. At first nobody wants to move, then Lee starts things off. Doc Cottle tries to go, because Doc Cottle is cool, but Adama sends him back; they can't afford to lose a doctor.

This is your chance, Baltar! This is your chance to do a truly selfless thing! Well, sort of. Really, even this would be motivated by politics, let's be honest.

Roslin shuffles down to show her support. Very moving.

The Colony is where Anders said it was, but it's also in orbit around a black hole! As always, it's not going to be easy. There's only one way in, and inevitably all the Cylon guns will be pointed at it.

One last suicide mission to save the future! Let's do this!

This show hasn't lost any of its power or drama in its final episodes. I'm psyched to see the series finale.
