Sorry, can't think of a title
 by Fëanor

I'm a bit tired and I want to go home, but I wanted to take some time out to spit out a little post for you folks, so here goes:

First, a sort of a music video, via kds. I'm ashamed to say I don't think I got all the references they were making, but it still gave me chills.

  • Arahan - Another great Korean film! I love those Koreans. This one's sort of an action/fantasy/fighting/comedy. I was pleased to finally see a fighting movie in the festival that had a lot of good fighting in it (no, Throw Down doesn't really count). Like many Asian films (although this is more emblematic of Hong Kong than Korean movies), it tends to swing wildly from goofy/funny to tragic/violent. But it's still a load of fun. My only complaints would be that it has a little more than its fair share of slow motion, and that it occasionally gets either too melodramatic or too goofy.

  • Cutie Honey - Absolute pure fun. If it had been a bit shorter and a bit less corny, I might have nominated it for the title of Most Awesomest Cute Fun Movie Ever! It's basically a live action anime, with all of the goofiness and fan service (read: near nudity and lesbian undertones) you expect from anime. There's also a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers connection, what with the dudes in the big monster suits fighting the super hero lady. Basically if you like Japanese anime even a little bit, you should by any means possible find a way to see this film.

  • Kontroll - One of the best movies I saw at the festival, if not the best. Simply fantastic from top to bottom. Great acting, great story, great photography, great lighting, great...whatever you can think of. As with all the other films, I'll have a more detailed review later. But while you're waiting for that, read dje2004's review. It's well written, contains a good synopsis, and I agree with pretty much everything he says. Just ignore his comments on the ending. He's crazy wrong about that.
And that's the end of the festival for me--a good conclusion, as I enjoyed all the films I saw yesterday quite a bit. I've decided to skip the favorites tonight and the closing night movie tomorrow, so that brings me to a grand total of 21 for this year--just a hair more than half the number I saw last year. I didn't see many awful movies this year, but I didn't see all that many great ones either. It was a bit mediocre. Still, I had tons of fun, and I'll be ready to see 20 or so more by next April.

As I mentioned above, I'll be working on my festival diary over the next weeks/months, which will contain detailed reviews of all movies, so watch out for that if you're interested. Peace out.
