Kippers and Herrings
 by Fëanor

  • Joystiq has links to lists of bestselling games for each of the major video game platforms. They also mention something about these being $20 or less, but I'm not sure where they're getting that from; I guess maybe because a lot of these games are getting old and you can probably find them for cheap? I don't know. Anyway, regardless of how much they cost, these games are probably pretty good, and it's always fun to find a list of high quality (or at least well-loved) games.

Speaking of which, Joystiq staff members have made their own lists of the great games of 2005. I see the GBA Zelda game The Minish Cap, which I got for Christmas and am in the midst of playing now, is on multiple people's lists. Seems like a good sign.

  • I was going to say that I really liked Kris Davidson's artwork, but after looking over some more of it, I realized I was just partial to his most recent paintings from 2005. But anyway, it's cool stuff, and thanks to Backwards City for pointing me in his direction.

  • Hey, Salon posted their 20 best downloads of 2005 (you have to subscribe or watch an ad to get to the page)! It's a great source for pretty decent, free, legal mp3s. Check it out! Particular favorites of mine are Aimee Mann's "Dear John," Dungen's "Panda," Spoon's "Turn My Camera On," and The Robot Ate Me's "Bad Feelings." I have the corresponding album for every song, except that last one.

  • This seems like a cool service: iTradeVideoGames.com. You sell your old used games to them for current market value, and get iBucks in return, which you can use to purchase other games on the site. The site takes a broker fee for every purchase you make, but it's only a buck. Not a bad idea. Unfortunately, I'm really bad at giving up my old games. I always feel like I'll want them again, even if they've been sitting on the shelf unplayed for ten years. D'oh. (Via Joystiq)

  • Last and not, by any means, least, happy new year to everyone! I celebrated the change of year yesterday by finally enacting my long-considered plan of having a bunch of people over and watching all six Star Wars movies in a row! Well, sort of. We got through four and a half movies, half the "Clone Wars" cartoons, the "Muppet Show" episode, the Troops short film (which is a double parody of "Cops" and Star Wars), and (somehow) the entire Holiday Special before the last of my fellow viewers decided to call it a night. I stuck it out through the rest of Empire and even into Jedi before I finally lost my fight with unconsciousness. When I woke up this morning, I picked up where I'd left off and finally completed my viewing of all the movies. Not quite the way I'd planned it, but good enough for me. I had a ton of fun and I think everybody else did, too. Although watching the Holiday Special again was quite agonizing. I'd blocked out in my memory just how long and awful it really was. I hope everyone forgives me for that!

Anyway, after watching all the movies together like that, I've come to the conclusion that, yes, I really do love Star Wars. When I got to the end of Jedi, I nearly felt tears welling up, and I kind of wanted to go back and watch them all again right away. Yes, even the prequels! They have their flaws, but I think all six movies (not to mention the "Clone Wars" cartoons, which are fantastic) are just really great, fun, and entertaining. The Star Wars universe is deep and rich, and a great place to spend your New Year's.

Btw, when is everybody going to come back over and finish drinking all this beer?!
