Targs and Torque, Volume Four
 by Fëanor

  • Looks like Intelligent Design is attacking on multiple fronts, taking on not just Evolution, but now the Big Bang as well. Yes, a Bush-appointed staffer at NASA has pointed out that the Big Bang is "just a theory" and we should really not try to force just one explanation for the creation of the universe on people. Of course, Bush has also appointed plenty of other people to important posts where they can easily suppress science the administration doesn't like, and feed us the science the administration does like. Which kind of takes away a little bit from the guy's point.

The stupid people are winning, folks, and they're going to take us with them when they finally destroy the world. Argh! (Via Digg)

  • Here's a wonderful story about wasps and their zombie roach slaves that is perfectly work safe, but that may horrify and nauseate you anyway. Enjoy! (Via kds)

  • I would like to add more items to our increasingly vast list of facts about Vin Diesel. These particular facts concern two of his upcoming movies. The one soonest to be released is Find Me Guilty, a courtroom drama/comedy directed by Sidney Lumet and based on a true story, in which Vin plays a member of the mob who elects to defend himself. I'll wait while you take all that in...

...okay? Anyways, from the trailer, which is somehow amusing, promising, shameful, and horrifying all at once, it looks like it's going to be kind of like My Cousin Vin. We'll see how it turns out.

The other movie, which has only just been announced as far as I can tell, is called Babylon A.D. and was inspired by a novel about genetic manipulation called Babylon Babies. Diesel plays a mercenary transporting a woman from Russia to Canada. On the way, he learns she's infected by a virus that could destroy humanity. Of course, this plot summary is totally unimportant to me; the Cinematical article already had me at "big budget sci-fi action-packed thriller" starring Vin Diesel. Aww, yeah.

  • You may have heard about this Russian fantasy flick Night Watch. It's the first episode in a group of films based on a series of novels. It's making big waves over there, and it's getting distribution in the US later this month. Problem is, not many people know the books over here, and apparently the movie's hard to follow without having read them first. Also, American audiences famously dislike reading subtitles. This normally leads to American prints of foreign films getting a horrible dub track instead, but for some reason Fox Searchlight decided they wanted to stick with subtitles, but just make them more exciting, pizzazzy, and interactive. Thus subtitles for Night Watch will
change color and position on the screen, simulate dripping blood, stutter in emulation of a fearful query, or dissolve into red vapor to emulate a character's gasping breaths.
Oh my. I...guess that could work. But I'm thinking that more likely it will be terrible, distracting, and annoying. Ah, well. We'll see what happens. I can't resist a fantasy epic anyway.
