Ninjas and Whippings
 by Fëanor

  • The folks who made the trailer for Jet Li's new film Fearless know their audience well. They didn't bother covering things like story or character - they just showed us what we really wanted to see: Jet Li fighting! Yeah, that's all I needed. I'm there. (Via The Movie Blog, fyi.)

  • James Cameron has refuted rumors that he is going to do Terminator 4 and True Lies 2. Which is just as well, I figure.

  • I highly recommend that you check out The Adventures of Dr. McNinja. It's an inspired web comic. Thanks to Sarcasmo for the heads up.

  • The fellow at A Tiny Revolution has graphed Gallup approval and disapproval polls for Nixon and W and compared them. It's interesting stuff. (This one comes to me via SuperTarzan.)

  • The guy who wrote The Fast and the Furious and SWAT is going to do an updated remake of The Wild Bunch. I'm with the Cinematical folks - that's gross. I also like their idea that Sam Peckinpah might just come up out of his grave and kick some ass.

It's not just that The Wild Bunch is a fantastic movie and a true classic, which it is. It's that The Wild Bunch was really about the passing away of a particular type of person and way of life. It was about the old-fashioned honorable Western gunslinger being replaced by cold-blooded killers, and their horses being replaced by cars - it was a period piece about the world moving on. I'm betting Ayers didn't get that; his movie is apparently going to be about the CIA and drug cartels. It will almost certainly be just another bloody, brainless action flick. The world has indeed moved on.

  • One of the Money Quotes on Salon's Fix today made me LOL all over the place. It's Michael's lovely father Joe Jackson, supposedly, according to the original article, attempting to downplay talk of physical abuse: "Katherine whipped Michael more than I did. She had to. I was working, I had two jobs. She was there with them all the time - not just Michael, all the children."

So...your defense is...you didn't personally do most of the whipping, because you were too busy? Awesome. Get that man a Father of the Year trophy!

Btw, while we're on the topic of The Fix, one of the other stories mentions Madonna and her new song ("Hung Up") and the video for it. Has anybody seen that video, where she's in the hot pink '80s workout clothes? Is it just me, or is that seriously pathetic? She's trying to hang with the hot young urban kids and their hip-hop, and she just looks ridiculous, especially when she's humping the stereo near the end. It might seriously be time to hang it up, girl.

  • UPDATE: This just in: remember how I was complaining about how they weren't going to release Super Princess Peach in America? Well, it turns out they are. Damn it! Now I want a DS.
