Grubs and Shrubs, Volume Two
 by Fëanor

  • This is a pretty cool idea: graphical passwords. There's a picture-based system (where you can pick the picture yourself, and authenticate by clicking certain predetermined points on the picture), and an icon-based system (where you pick a small number of icons, which are then mixed up randomly in a group of many others, and authenticate by clicking in a triangular - or other-shaped - area between them; the icons are then mixed up and the process is repeated multiple times). I wouldn't go through the trouble of using this process to protect my livejournal account, for instance, but I might try it out if I had something really important to protect. (Via Digg)

  • Check out some cool new pics from the set of Superman Returns, via Cinematical. I'm very excited about this one. I get the feeling from seeing him in costume that Kevin Spacey is going to be fantastic as Lex. Brandon Routh doesn't look like too shabby a Superman, either. And how can you resist Parker Posey?

  • Apparently this is super-old, and there's even a page for it on Snopes (which confirms that it is for real, though just a prototype), but I can't remember seeing it before, so here you go: the computer of the future! You need the right surfaces to make it work, and I bet that keyboard would be hard to get used to, but still - it's a bunch of pens that turn into a computer! That's so rad! (Via Digg)

  • The sex.com domain name was just sold for $14 million. (Warning: that link is to an adult entertainment industry news site, so it may not be strictly work-safe.) Strangely enough, the company that bought it is based in Boston, and is called Escom LLC. Apparently they already updated the home page, but, uh, I haven't exactly checked. My employers don't pay much attention to what we do on the web here, but I'm not sticking my neck out THAT far. (Via Digg)

  • Looks like the Digg effect has shot them down for now, but you should definitely check out these photos of the surface of Venus when the page comes back up in the future. They're old (they were taken by the Soviet probes that landed on the planet in the '70s) and they're not particularly exciting, per se (you can't see any Venusians waving in the background, for instance), except for the fact that THEY WERE TAKEN ON VENUS!!! Seriously, pictures of another planet always fill me with awe, even if that planet looks a lot like a particularly boring part of New Mexico. (Via Digg)

  • These old ads and sales brochures are really amazing. Some are amusing in that way that only items of retro Americana can be, but others are surprisingly beautiful. Check 'em out. (Via Backwards City)

  • I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see Lady Vengeance (or Sympathy for Lady Vengeance), the third in Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy (which included Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy). It's going to have an official US release in late April, and the distributors, Tartan Films, are doing something really cool and, as far as I know, unprecedented: they're letting myspace users choose the advertising poster. You vote by noting your favorite of the seven posters shown in the comments. I don't know if I'm willing to become a myspace user just to do this, but it's still pretty cool. I'd definitely choose 5,6, or 7. Probably 5. What about you folks? (Via Cinematical)
