Japes and Gimcrackery
 by Fëanor

  • This one's for poppy: Sam Raimi's next project after Spider-Man 3 is rumored to be a film adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men. I'm not sure how to feel about this, as I'm no longer a big fan of Raimi's. I also don't really get Pratchett's humor, but poppy does, so I'll probably end up going to see this, and anyway it sounds like it could be fun.

  • Some people should really just not be allowed to produce offspring. Case in point, this actual quote from an actual person in an actual article (a picture of the relevant part of the print story is included in Joystiq's post):
I'd rather my son take a more proactive, less habitual drug like cocaine, than lock himself away and play video games. It's so lazy. At least with pills and coke you're out and about doing something.
  • This is a pretty amusing little widget: the Lulu Titlescorer. It claims to use a "scientific" process to analyze a novel title and then give you the percentage chance of that novel becoming a bestseller. For instance, my torrid thriller, Death Wagon has a 69% chance of being a bestseller! Woo hoo! Fame and fortune here I come! (Via Backwards City)

  • I have still further controversy to report over that National Geographic Children Magazine article. The magazine has now denied Nintendo's denial. So who knows what's really going on there. Anyway, here's some more hints and rumors about possible Revolution functionality, also via Joystiq, via an online survey for Nintendo (done by a marketing firm). Most of this has to do with the supposed extreme backwards compatibility of the Revolution; looks like it's going to work like this: the Revolution will include emulators of the various older Nintendo systems and you'll be able to purchase and download ROMs of certain specific games (the current lists are included in the link). Again, take all of this with a grain of salt; looks like it's just an early suggestion of how this might work.

  • I really like the idea of getting Diana Rigg's daughter, Rachael Stirling, to play the next Bond girl, so I hope this rumor is true. I don't know much about Stirling, but apparently her only starring role was in a movie about hot lesbians, which is okay by me. But seriously, this would create some pretty cool (though also vaguely creepy) continuity with the earlier films, seeing as how Stirling's mom played Bond's one and only wife.

  • While we're talking about rumors, hoaxes, and retractions, I should probably mention that the producer of the Transformers movie has come out and denied that any test footage has been leaked, so I guess that means that video I posted yesterday was a fake. I still stand by my judgement, however, that it was really cool.
