Reticules, Volume One
 by Fëanor

  • This is pretty funny, although I guess it wasn't very funny for the students: the officials at University of Alabama meant to inform a specific group of students, via email, that because they hadn't met certain prerequisites, some of their classes would be dropped. Unfortunately, they mistakenly sent the email to EVERYBODY. Yep, every one of the 21,750 students at UA got the message. Understandably, a lot of them freaked out. Poor bastards. (Via Digg)

  • Holy crap, the teaser trailer for the movie adaptation of horror video game Silent Hill is really damn creepy. Check it out. I didn't think I was interested in this at all, but now I kinda am. (Via Joystiq)

  • Speaking of trailers, here's one for the upcoming film adaptation of the Old English epic poem Beowulf, entitled Beowulf & Grendel (which means, I guess, that they won't be getting to the part about the dragon. Sigh. Nobody ever talks about that). I'm impressed that they've got Stellan Skarsgard in there, and some of the locations and sets are pretty...accurate-looking? But I'm disappointed that Grendel isn't more monstrous (they call him a "troll," but he just looks like a big ugly guy), and that the dialogue and general look of the film is so dull. I mean, this was a great, epic, poetic story about incredible heroes and horrific monsters. Now it just looks like a bunch of guys wandering around some gray hills, occasionally hitting each other. • The title of this Joystiq article is a bit misleading; I'm pretty sure you can't actually turn your NES into an SNES, short of swapping the insides of those two consoles. But it does sound like this page they're referring to (along with the guy's book) could help you get some more use out of your banged up old Nintendo. And considering that my parents just dragged our old, not-quite-functioning-the-last-time-I-checked NES down out of the attic, I have to say, I'm intrigued.

  • Despite some of his recent misfires, I'm still a fan of David Fincher, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye on his future projects. Luckily, three of them are mentioned in this Cinematical article, the first being a film on the real-life Zodiac killer, entitled, unsurprisingly, Zodiac. That one's already in the process of being filmed. The second is still in development; it's called Benjamin Button and is based on a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a man who starts aging backwards(!!). Crazy. The third, the most interesting of all, and the focus of the Cinematical post, is a film called Torso. This one is sort of a combination of the first two, in that it's both an adaptation of a story (in this case a graphic novel), and based on true events. Apparently, after Elliot Ness took down Capone, he became Cleveland's public safety officer. Seems like a bit of a downgrade, but he wasn't to remain out of action for long; torsos started showing up in the city's river, and then the killer started sending Ness taunting letters. Ness, apparently pissed, put together a team and tracked down and arrested the guy, despite the fact that he had no real background in police work (he was a treasury agent, remember). Sounds like rich source material for a what could be a great movie. I'll be keeping an eye out for it.
