Pods and Antipodes, Volume Three |
by Fëanor |
- Recently unearthed 160-million-year-old fossils reveal the oldest known ancestor of the Tyrannosaurus Rex to be a crested, feathered thingie. Neat. (Via Digg)
- An intriguing clip from the upcoming straight-to-DVD animated movie, Ultimate Avengers. Enjoy. (Via Cinematical)
- A new production of Iben's play Hedda Gabler started in NYC a couple of days ago. It's called Heddatron, and half the major roles are played by actual remote-controlled robots. Their
lines will be delivered using prerecorded text to speech. Some will be humanoid, others small and wheeled.... [The] strange script cuts to the heart of Ibsen's story: A woman chained up in her own life struggles to break free of social programming. That struggle is mirrored by the robots, who attempt to escape their own programming and achieve true AI - self-awareness. Just as Hedda rails against a world that can't hear her, the robots represent potential that one day may be unleashed. Read on for more of the insane details.
- If you haven't heard, there's some controversy over a pretty clearly anti-gay stance that Blizzard has taken in its wildly popular MMORPG World of Warcraft. The good news is, they may be about to change their policies. Check out an open letter to Blizzard here, and Joystiq's latest article on the subject here.
- Guillermo del Toro is in talks to direct a film based on a script called Killing on Carnival Row, which is about a police investigation into a murder. The interesting part is that it's set in a dark, mystical city populated by fairies, humans and other creatures, and the murder victim is a fairy. Sounds cool; it reminds me of a particular episode in Alan Moore's comic Top 10, where superhero cops investigate the murder of a God. I'll keep an eye out for it.
- They've just recently found an intact tomb in Egypt's Valley of Kings - the first one since King Tut's in 1922. I've been fascinated by all things Ancient Egyptian since I was a kid, so this is pretty exciting news to me. (Via Digg)
