Things! |

-I ran out on my wife and her parents cleaning our condo today and went to see a movie. Woo hoo! It was The Science of Sleep, Michel Gondry's new movie. I'm still not sure how to feel about it. It was the story of a man with serious insecurities and a wild imagination who is constantly mistaking his dreams for reality and vice versa. He moves into his mother's apartment after his father's death and meets a woman he likes next door. At this point, I somehow got it in my head that things would proceed as in your typical romantic comedy, and that despite various trials and tribulations, the man and the woman would end up together and live happily ever after. I'm not sure how I came to this conclusion, having seen and enjoyed Gondry's amazing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which is basically all about the fact that people never live happily ever after, but whatever. I also, as I usually do, took it for granted that I should sympathize with and like the main character.
Near the end of the film, a scene occurs which made me realize that the main character is actually not a very likable guy - he is childish, emotionally stunted, pathetic, and sometimes just plain nasty - and that there's really little chance that he will ever live happily ever after with anybody - except, of course, in his dreams. I was not prepared for this realization, so it knocked me off balance, and I left the movie unsettled and unhappy.
That being said, a great deal of the film was quite excellent - funny, intelligent, imaginative, beautiful. I loved the crazy dream sequences. The acting was great, the characters felt real. I think now that I know what's coming at the end, a second viewing might very well improve my opinion of the film. Regardless, it's definitely the work of a group of very talented people.
-Btw, on a completely different subject, I really need to stop doing things the hard way. I just discovered that iTunes has a Backup menu item right there in the menu!! So it's time for me to backup my iPod again, the right way this time. (UPDATE: Well, scratch that idea. Turns out that backup thing is specifically for copying your iTunes library to a CD or DVD. Lame! Looks like I might actually have to buy yet another piece of software to do what I really want to do here. Sigh.)
-Speaking of the iPod, it has a TON more music on it, and the potential of having another TON more on it soon, thanks to some iTunes gift certificates/cards I received for my birthday, not to mention one or two old school CDs (thank you all, again). I was sure I had so much music I needed to get, but I now find myself in the odd position of being unsure what to do with all my iTunes monies. Especially since it turns out the new Beck album hasn't been released yet, and iTunes has no Tool. Well, I'm sure I'll come up with something... |
