another post!!!
 by Fëanor

Don't think I've mentioned here yet that I beat the Mario & Luigi DS game I've been obsessed with. It was a good play, but actually almost too easy. Anyway, it was definitely way easier than the previous game in the series, which included two of the toughest boss battles I'd ever played. In this game, I never really felt like I was in terrible danger. I always had plenty of money and plenty of items, and I beat the final boss on the first try (although it took me quite a long while...I actually stayed late at work finishing it, if you must know. It's not like I could just pause it and leave it on while I walked to the train! And there was no way I was going to do all that again if I didn't have to. Shut up!).

But anyway, like I said, a ton of fun, and a very well put together game, very funny and clever. Now I'm playing Peccable's birthday gift to me, Summon Night, which is yet another RPG, but this one's closer to the classic Final Fantasy, random encounters, anime/manga type style, and with straight up live action combat instead of the sort of semi-turn-based combat of the Mario RPGs. It's definitely more difficult and complex than the Mario game, and requires forethought and planning and skill. I like it! Oh, the story is, you're training to be a great craftlord, which means you have to fight monsters, in order to collect materials, in order to forge weapons, which you use to fight more monsters, and so on. You also learn new weapon forging techniques to make better weapons as the game progresses. You have a guardian spirit who basically is a magic-user who backs you up and carries items for you. My guardian spirit is a weird, clingy, pink-haired girl called Sugar who's very jealous of anybody who gets my attention. She's actually kind of creepy. Of course, my character in the game is generally oblivious of her attentions, like all male characters are of the attentions of women in all anime stories. Sigh.

[UPDATE: Actually, Summon Night reminds me a little of Diablo 2, in that you're battling your way down through a dungeon, trying to collect items to make your character and his weapons stronger, and trying to make it to the next teleport pad before you get wacked. I love that kind of stuff. For some reason collecting items and then customizing my character and his weapons with them really makes me happy. I think it's a good thing I haven't gotten into WoW, because it would probably swallow me whole.]

Meanwhile, I've ploughed my way through all the TV shows on my iPod; time to load it up again! "Lost" and "Battlestar" were awesome as always, and I'm really enjoying the BBC's new "Doctor Who" series. I finished what I think was the third (?) disc of the first season, which had a bunch of good episodes on it. "Father's Day" was really moving and fascinating, and the two parter set during 1941 was quite good, as well. Looking forward to ripping the next disc, which already arrived in the mail. I think I'm going to go ahead and buy the program I've been using, Magic DVD Ripper. None of the free things I've found or that people pointed me toward do exactly what I want, but the Magic DVD Ripper is indeed essentially magic. Pretty much you put a DVD in and click a button, and in a little while the thing's ready to go on your iPod. Sweet.

Anyways, show tonight, then poppy's away for the weekend, which means Floyd and I will be sitting at home, trying to drown our loneliness in football and beer. And Guitar Hero II, of course, assuming I manage to pick up a copy.
