A couple of things I like |
by Fëanor |
Gmail: Yeah, I know. Late adopter, yada yada yada. But I already had three email addresses, and it didn't make sense to start using yet another one. Until my feanorsworkshop email program crapped out again, like it does almost every month, and Jill at Phillyist suggested I switch to Gmail. I happened to already have a Gmail account, for reasons rather silly and pointless, but I didn't want to have to change my address everywhere. Jill pointed out that there was an easy solution to that: just redirect the feanorsworkshop mail to the gmail address, and then change the gmail settings to reply as if from feanorsworkshop. Good stuff.
But anyway, Gmail is easily the best email application I've ever used. It's simple, intuitive, and beautiful. The interface, the chatting, the way it updates you when a new reply comes in so you don't have to have crossed communications, the way it refreshes automatically and you can just look at the page header to know if you have new email - the whole thing is just brilliant. I didn't like the way it organized emails into conversations at first, but I'm getting used to it.
Working from home: Yesterday poppy talked me out of driving to the train over the treacherous icy slush, and we both stayed home. Luckily, VM recently made all of us developers set up VPN and remote connection on our work desktops, so I was able to work from home. I think I actually got more work done than I usually do when I'm in the office. It was comfortable and convenient and I could have taken a break to play Wii whenever I wanted to (although I did not, because I would have felt super guilty). All in all, a good deal. Needless to say, I'm back in the office this morning. Ah, well. |
