TV Is Love
 by Fëanor

Last night, in a rare moment of synergy with my TelePhillyist post (I almost never actually see the programs I tell other people about) I watched, on TCM, the great majority of Spielberg on Spielberg, a new documentary that essentially consists of Stephen Spielberg talking about his movies for an hour and a half straight. He never once drinks a glass of water, either!

It's a pretty good film. At first I was struck by Spielberg's honesty about his mistakes and his struggles, but later on I began to sense that there was also quite a large ego behind it all. Of course, there would have to be at this point, given the amount of great popular films he's made, the amount of money he's made, and the amount of accolades and awards he's won. Regardless, it was interesting stuff, and fun to take a look at his films again, sometimes from a very different, more personal perspective.

Later that night, I found myself drawn in by an episode of Simon Schama's Power of Art. This particular entry in the series was looking at Rembrandt, and specifically at his last great masterpiece, Claudius Civilis. Rembrandt is one of my favorite painters, and Schama has a very interesting way of telling a story, and of interpreting paintings, so I was unable to go to sleep and had to watch the program to the end. It was particularly neat to see the bit on The Night Watch, as that's one of my favortive Rembrandt paintings - and not just because it's also one of his most famous, or because it's featured in a King Crimson song. The story of the final masterpiece which the program was really all about was a particularly interesting and tragic one, especially since I couldn't remember ever seeing the painting before, or hearing of it.

Anyway, that's my story about TV. Bye!
