Ozu
 by Fëanor

As you probably know, I'm a pretty big fan of Japanese culture and film, and a huge fan of Akira Kurosawa's films in particular. Another man often mentioned in the same breath with Kurosawa when critics are speaking of the great Japanese filmmakers is Yasujiro Ozu. I've been reading about this guy and his movies since I took film classes in college, but somehow I never actually got around to seeing one of his movies until last night. And I'm both disappointed and relieved to say that I really didn't care for it, and that I won't be going to the trouble of seeking out any more of his films.

The film was Good Morning, and it's one that, IIRC, is often pointed out as one of Ozu's best. But poppy and I just found it boring. It centers on an area of Tokyo where a bunch of families are living in small houses pressed up very close together. The women gossip and fuss all day long, the men just work and talk about work, and the children are obsessed with TV and with fart jokes. It's kind of cute, and there are some laughs, but mostly it just sort of drones on dully at an even keel, with not much of anything happening. I actually turned it off after about an hour, with a half hour of its running time still left. Poppy and I could both sort of see where it was going, and neither of us really cared enough to follow it through to its conclusion.
