New releases
Ultimate Power #8
It's the second-to-last issue in this series that has seen Marvel's Ultimate universe cross over into the Squadron Supreme universe. The stage is set for yet another gigantic super battle, so let's get it on!
Batman #670
This issue marks the start of yet another big, multi-book DC cross-over story, this one called "The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul" - can you guess what's going to happen?! Yeah, they're bringing that guy back again. The arc will be crossing into pretty much all of DC's Batman-related titles: Robin, Nightwing, and Detective Comics. And like a dumbass, I've already written down all the issues of those titles I'll have to collect and added them to my spreadsheet. They got me again! Bastards. Here's hoping it's a good DC cross-over series - as unlikely as that seems.
Hellboy: Darkness Calls #6
I believe this will be the final issue in the current Hellboy story arc, which makes me sad, but also pleases me, as it means I will now have the complete tale, and will be able to go back and read it from the beginning in one sitting, which I'm convinced will cause it to make a lot more sense than it has been making for me so far. Which is not to say I haven't been enjoying it, because I have - a great deal. It's just that reading comics in issues can get a little confusing, that's all. Regardless, as I've said before, a week that features a new Mignola comic is always a good week.
Superman Confidential #8
Still not the return of Darwyn Cooke's storyline; instead, this is the beginning of a new 3-part story about Superman's first meeting with Darkseid and The Forever People. I'll give it at least one issue and see how it goes. If it sucks, that means I can skip at least the next two issues of this book. Woo hoo!
Action Comics #858
I don't believe I've given this Superman title a chance yet, and as it's now starting off an interesting new story arc about the original Legion of Super-Heroes from the 31st century, I figure the time has come.
Crime Bible: The Five Lessons of Blood #1
I'm picking up a surprisingly large number of DC titles this week (and a surprisingly small number of Marvel titles), and this is another one. It's written by Greg Rucka and it's the first in a five-part miniseries about The Question fighting an evil monk or something. I don't know, it just sounded kind of cool.
Midnighter: Armageddon
A one-shot from Christos Gage about the Authority - well, mostly just the Midnighter - facing off once again against the end of the world. Gage hasn't blown me away on Authority: Prime, but he's pretty good, and I can't resist a book centered around one of my favorite comic characters of all time trying to save humanity.
X-Men: Messiah Complex #1
I'm pissed at myself that they've tricked me into picking this up, but I'm going to do it anyway. It's Ed Brubaker writing what is supposedly "the biggest event to hit the X-Men in ten years" - although of course this particular book is just launching yet another multi-comic cross-over event. I don't plan on following that whole thing, but I thought I'd at least get the introductory book and see where things are headed. The storyline is interesting, at least - a new mutant has suddenly appeared, just when everybody thought there couldn't possibly ever be any more, and everyone is fighting to get the mutant on their side and learn his/her secret first. |
