Thoughts on Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s |
by Fëanor |
When I told Vis Major I was planning on getting this game, she said I should borrow it from her first, so I could make sure I really wanted to pay for it. She said it was fun, but not all that challenging or interesting. Having borrowed it from her and played it for some hours today, I have to agree. I thought I'd breeze through Easy first, but it was so boring I switched over to Medium, and now I'm into the fourth tier without having hit a song yet that was the least bit difficult; I've gotten five stars on everything on the first try. I was surprised to find myself not all that familiar with a lot of the songs, either, although this fourth tier does have a lot of familiar and enjoyable hits.
I'm also disappointed that they didn't really bother changing the game at all for this one. It's literally just Guitar Hero II, but with different songs. The menus are all the same, the characters are pretty much all the same (except maybe different outfits? And there seem to be fewer available), the tutorial things are exactly the same (even the audio segments, which they could have at least spiffed up or added different stories to). Admittedly, that's all it was really advertised as, but jeez, if this is all it was going to be, why not just offer it as a cheap add-on to Guitar Hero II instead of as a whole different, full-priced game?
Oh, and the title of the game is really awkward, clumsy, and stupid. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s? That doesn't even make sense. Why didn't they just call it Guitar Hero II: '80s Edition?
All of that being said, it's still a Guitar Hero game, so it's still a ton of fun, it has a ton of great songs, and a lot of them are really fun to play. I also love how they eighties-ified the Grim Ripper character by adding 3D glasses and a big clock around his neck. Brilliant!
I'm going to try to burn through this one as fast as I can so I can get it back to Vis Major next week. And so I can start playing Guitar Hero III, which I finally broke down and bought today - for the Wii, of course.
UPDATE: Many thanks to Vis Major, btw, for letting me borrow the game.
Also, is it just my TV, or did they mix the singer's voice really low on this one? I can hardly hear the lyrics on most of the songs, which makes me sad, especially when I'm trying to sing along to "Turning Japanese." |
