On the Viewer: Saw
 by Fëanor

This movie turned out to be not nearly as gory or as awful as I thought it was going to be. It isn't just one torture sequence after another, as I'd been led to believe; it's actually a pretty clever and riveting little mystery/horror/thriller. The acting isn't always great, and the ending leaves a lot of things unresolved, which is disappointing. And yeah, it is pretty similar to Se7en in a lot of ways - a psychotic killer preaching to humanity about how they've gone astray via a series of horrifying, gory, and carefully planned out murders. But other than that I really only have one big problem with the film: the strong suggestion that what Jigsaw does to people actually helps them, or at least leaves them grateful to him in some way (assuming they survive, of course). Yes, I've heard about Helsinki syndrome. But when I imagine how I would feel after someone imprisoned me in a terrifying and deadly trap and forced me to do horrible things to myself and/or another human being in order to survive, "grateful" is definitely not the first word that comes to mind. I don't think I would appreciate life more, which is Jigsaw's ridiculous purpose. Most likely I'd hate my torturer and myself, I'd be haunted by the things I'd done, and I'd want to kill myself. I mean, I'm just guessing, but still.

Anyway, besides those problems, I found the movie quite engaging and entertaining. I don't think I'm going to go to the trouble of seeking out the many sequels, but if Saw 2 happened to be on the television and I had nothing better to do, I'd certainly give it a shot.
