I was digging through some of Sarcasmo's old links and found this--a gallery of pictures of folks jumping. There's something about it that I really enjoy. It just looks so...fun. I kind of want to take some jump pictures myself now.
It's been pretty busy at work recently. I haven't had much time to work on my various website projects. Ah, well.
I have been reading more of those graphic novels I got at poppy's library, though. I read a book of short Hellboy stories by various writers and artists called Weird Tales Volume One. It wasn't exactly what I'd wanted--I really want to read some of the basic, original Mike Mignola Hellboy stories, because I'm really interested in the character and his story, but my only knowledge of him comes from the movie, which disappointed me. But anyway, I know enough about Hellboy so that this book wasn't totally confusing. And actually, it's quite cool. The stories are really short, so most of the time they don't get much of a chance to go anywhere before they're over, but some of the authors did a really good job even with the short length. The different visual styles, writing styles, and tones made for a really eclectic and interesting book. The first story, which is a funny one about some of the Hellboy's childhood shenanigans, was probably my favorite, although there was also another really neat one where Hellboy has a dream/vision of death, and another one about his surprise birthday party that was a nice character study. And another one with lots of Exorcist references that I rather enjoyed.
But before I read that book, I read another Batman book. I can't remember the title (while trying to find it on Amazon, I came across this book; umm, my Spanish isn't too good--what is this book about?? Do I want to know?). (UPDATE: The title, for those who are interested, is Harvest Breed.) I was attracted to it by the freaky cover, with Batman crouching on top of a church drooling blood out of his mouth. But it was pretty darn bad. The paintings were pretty neat, but they were also often so abstract and "artistic" that I couldn't tell what the hell was going on. And the writing was just awful. Eeek. It made me worry that Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore are the only guys in comics who know how to write. But that's crazy talk. I know there are other good guys out there. The trick is to avoid all the talentless hacks somehow. It's like walking through a minefield...
Anyway, the next book I'm reading is a Justice League special in which the gang goes up against a dragon. It looks like everybody except Wonder Woman gets knocked out of action somehow and she ends up having to go it alone against the thing in the finale. I only just started it, but the painting is beautiful and the writing is good solid stuff. Plus, there's gnomes and dragons. I'm pretty excited about it.
Tonight is game night. We may or may not be doing one or more of the following things: rolling up characters for our upcoming D&D campaign, playing Jacob Marley, Esq., and playing HeroScape. Woo hoo!
P.S. My website has been going up and down all afternoon. I apologize for this. Stupid Omnis. I might have to find another provider one of these days. |
