On the Viewer - Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Episode 8, "Bombad Jedi") |
by Fëanor |
The most despised character in all of Star Wars gets a starring role in this episode. Yes, it's Jar-Jar Binks, and sadly the animated series is very faithful to the prequels as far as portraying him is concerned. He has the same ridiculous voice, speaks in the same baby-talk version of English, and he bumbles about in the same clumsy fashion, somehow managing, thanks to pure luck or fate or the Force, to succeed in saving himself and his friends, and defeating his enemies. And so, as one might expect, I still find him irritating, but strangely enough not as irritating as I do in the movies. He's even mildly amusing sometimes. My favorite part of the episode is when he opens a closet in Padme's spaceship, finds a Jedi's cloak, and innocently asks C-3PO to whom he thinks the cloak belongs. 3PO knows it's Anakin's, of course, but he can't say that because Padme and Anakin's relationship is a secret, so he uncomfortably stutters out that he has no idea. Heh. Another good scene comes later when C-3PO tells Padme the ship has been destroyed. "Battle droids?" she asks. "No," 3PO answers. "Jar-Jar?" she says immediately. "Jar-Jar," C-3PO agrees wearily. It's a funny moment.
Padme's surprisingly bad-ass in this episode, easily escaping manacles and a prison cell, out-smarting and over-powering various Battle Droids, and just generally kicking butt.
Luckily for Jar-Jar, he makes a very good friend. And at the end, we all learn a valuable lesson. Blargh. Not the best episode of the series, but actually not nearly as bad as I thought it might be. |
