On the Viewer - Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Episode 10, "The Lair of Grievous") |
by Fëanor |
I found the opening scene of this one, wherein Kit Fisto is walking towards a group of clones and his hooded ex-padawan (Nadar Vebb), strangely menacing. I had the strong feeling the hooded figure was going to turn around and reveal himself to be a horrible monster, and not Fisto's former padawan at all. I'm not sure if this sense of menace was created on purpose, to set the stage for the menacing things to come, or if I'm just crazy, but either way it's interesting.
And menacing this episode is! Grievous' lair is a really creepy place - a dark maze full of traps, hideous statuary, and the trophies he's taken from dead Jedi. I love the fascinating setup, too: the idea that this is a trap set by Dooku, but the question of who the trap has been set for: the Jedi, or Grievous? In fact it's a test of loyalty and competency for Grievous. If he fails it, he'll die, but if he succeeds, he can go on leading their forces. Interesting.
Grievous himself is also very creepy and spider-like here; more disturbing and threatening than he normally is.
It's cool to see a Mon Calamari as a Jedi, but it's disappointing that he's such a hothead. What's up, Fisto? Couldn't you train him better?
The maze even has a minotaur! That's an awesome monster right there.
Heh. I like Grievous' surly, sarcastic doctor. Based on Leonard McCoy, perhaps? He makes some interesting references to Grievous' past, too: "Sometimes I wonder why you submitted to the changes." Hmmm. It's pretty gross and disturbing when he takes Grievous' face mask off, too, and Grievous makes those horrible noises. It makes it worse that we don't see what's under there. Have I mentioned before that this show is highly inappropriate for children?
Nadar's comments are interesting: "In this war, strength prevails. The rules have changed." Obviously, he's headed toward the Dark Side. But you get the sense a lot of the Jedi could be feeling the same way he does, and could be headed there with him.
Aww, Grievous is sad that Gor is dead. I feel kind of bad for Gor, too. He was just a poor lonely monster doing what he was told. *sniff*
Ooh, bad-ass fight between Nadar and the droids and Grievous! But there goes the doctor... and there goes Nadar. Man, this show is so full of death and destruction! It's really brutal.
Another interesting hint about Grievous' past from Fisto: "You might have been a proud warrior once, but now you're just a pawn in Dooku's game."
Man, Fisto is pretty metal! He is a wise, Jamaican Jedi of doom! And he knows when to retreat.
Yoda sees the same message I did in Nadar's attitude: "In this war, a danger there is of losing who we are." Neat stuff. Another great episode. Exciting and unsettling. |
