This is very possibly the worst episode of this show yet. Once again Obi-Wan and Anakin reveal themselves to be vain and incompetent. They get drunk in the pirate hideout and wake up in prison, then desperately try to escape before the Republic representatives arrive, so they can save face. But despite the fact that they are assisted in this endeavor by Count Dooku, a Sith Lord, they can't manage to escape until Jar-Jar arrives and cuts the power to the base.
Yes, that's right, two Jedi and a Sith Lord have to be saved from a gang of stupid pirates by Jar-Jar Binks. Obi-Wan and Anakin try to pretend that's not what happened, but that's what happened!
The two Jedi and the Sith Lord actually get out of their cell at one point and are on their way out, but then they run into a handful of guards with guns and surrender. What? Dooku could lightning bolt a couple of guards while all three of you stole their guns with your Force powers! Remember? Your Force powers? It's just inconceivable that these three guys together could not escape this prison, but they try and fail multiple times. It's embarrassing and ridiculous.
And oddly, Jar-Jar is quite different in this episode than he has been in the past. First of all, his voice sounds different; I suspect Ahmed Best was not available. Secondly, he doesn't seem nearly as dumb or as clumsy. He actually comes up with vaguely clever ideas. He concocts plans and strategies. When he inevitably destroys the enemies' tanks through "clumsiness," this time it seems like a deliberate act. And before he intervenes, the clone soldiers seem ready to give up, and constantly require his guidance and assistance to complete the mission.
It's all insane and makes no sense. It's like an episode from a reverse universe. I've got so many shows I'm trying to keep up with now, and I'm falling so far behind with all of them, that I might have to just drop this one. I'm not sure it's good enough anymore to be worth my time. |
