I understand a lot of critics enjoyed Elvis Costello's collaboration with Allen Toussaint, The River in Reverse, and likewise his collaboration with Burt Bacharach, Painted from Memory. But so far I've found only one decent track on each album (the title track on the former, and "The Sweetest Punch" on the latter). The rest of the songs are pretty bad. Maybe it's just that I don't like this style of songwriting, but I find the lyrics clumsy and obvious, and the music melodramatic and/or dull. I much prefer Elvis Costello alone, or with the Attractions. Blood and Chocolate, My Aim Is True, Imperial Bedroom, This Year's Model - what happened to the guy who made those great masterpieces? Ah, well. |
