Tacos of Sadness
 by Fëanor

A new Mexican place called La Guadalupana opened right down the street from us a while ago and I'd been looking forward to trying it. The other night poppy and I finally got around to getting over there, along with a couple of friends who live nearby and had already been there. Half the menu is in Spanish, and the food seems very authentic; there are even tongue tacos! And along with tacos and chalupas and burritos there was also a lot of other stuff on there I'd never even heard of before and had no idea what it was. Our friends recommended we not bother asking for explanations of the menu items, however, as the only answer they got was, "Oh, that's a tortilla with cheese and meat in it." And really, doesn't that describe pretty much all Mexican food? So why worry!

Unfortunately, there is a real sameness to a lot of the food they offer. In lieu of a basket of chips and salsa, we were given small round tortillas with a spicy, tomato-based sauce, cheese, and onions on top. Then we ordered a couple of different types of appetizers... all of which turned out to be round tortillas with spicy sauce, cheese, and onions on top. It seemed like pretty much the exact same stuff, except sometimes the tortillas were a little thicker and oval shaped, and sometimes the sauce was green instead of red. Worst of all, despite the spicy sauce, it was all pretty bland. It got a little better when I added some salt, but it still wasn't very good.

I ordered a beef burrito for my meal. It had beans, rice, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and chunks of beef in it, and it was pretty huge. I was looking forward to it, but like the appetizers it was a little bland, and some of the strips of beef were stringy and fatty. Adding some salsa helped, and oddly I enjoyed it more after I tore it apart and ate in pieces with my fork. But it was still pretty disappointing.

I got the sense that everybody else was pretty disappointed with their meals, as well. The food wasn't really that cheap, either. I was hoping we'd have an exciting authentic Mexican place nearby we could go to whenever the craving hit us, but I can't think of a reason to return to La Guadalupana.
