- First of all, and most importantly, there are photos of our niece now available in the photography section, courtesy poppy! Be forewarned: Cara is very cute and very tiny.
- Last night, poppy and I hung out with Aerenchyma and Steak Knife and their baby, the Bubber Boo (not to mention Gouda, the Wheaton Terrorist). We had tasty barbecue from Famous Dave's (which is a "fat people restaurant" according to A and SK), and then settled in to watch a movie.
First, we tried watching Sideways, which by now I'm sure you've all heard of, so I won't even bother linking to the imdb page. It's that roadtrip/whine/wine movie that got nominated for an Oscar. Well, poppy and I couldn't really stand it. It was just the movie I was afraid it was going to be--highly uncomfortable to watch, full of embarassing situations and totally despicable and shameful and unlikable characters. Or at least, that was the feeling we got from the first 10 minutes or so, after which point, poppy and I were bitching about it so much that Aerenchyma couldn't take it anymore, turned it off, and put in a different movie.
So we ended up watching Primer. This is a movie I'd wanted to see for a while, and it turned out to be really quite neat. It did make poppy and I feel pretty dumb, though, because we just couldn't quite understand what was going on pretty much all of the time. It's about a bunch of guys building a strange machine in their garage which turns out to allow them to time travel. How it works is never explained in any way that I could understand. A lot is left half-described and half-said, which makes the movie mighty interesting, but also mighty confusing. I had the intense feeling while watching it that if Peccable were watching it with me, he would not only completely understand it, but would be able to predict what was going to happen next. Me, I didn't know what had happened even after it was over.
Despite my confusion, I found it to be quite a well-made and engaging film, and I think I got the gist of it, which is basically: don't time travel. It's confusing and it'll ruin your life and possibly those of other people.
- The film festival has already started, and I'm heading to my first movies today. I'll be writing my usual diary of the film festival, which will probably be done weeks or months after the festival is actually over. Anyway, expect not to see much of me or read much posting from me in the next week or so. I'll be busy movie-geeking out.
Speaking of which, I'd better get a move on if I want to catch my first movie today. Peace out, folks.
