Links and a Weekend Round-up |
by Fëanor |
- Thanks as usual go to Sarcasmo's Corner for making me aware of a couple of cool links: Dracula blogged (an obvious but purely genius idea--the book, consisting as it does of a series of letters, journal entries, and newspaper articles--is in blog form already anyway) and the fan-made Star Wars film Pink Five (which posits the all-important question "What if a Valley Girl had piloted one of the X-Wings during the Battle of Yavin?" This first one is funny, but I actually prefer the sequel, Pink Five Strikes Back).
- I enjoyed the Bertrand Russell quote James Wolcott posted on his blog yesterday. The quote is from an essay called "Can Religion Cure Our Troubles?" (short answer: no). The essay was written in 1954, but 50 years later its message is still timely and important. Food for thought, my friends; food for thought.
- This weekend was pretty busy: had friends over Friday night to play-test Peccable's new card game (verdict: needs a few tweaks, but quite a cool and smart game; as I suspected, I suck at it) and eat horrible food (eating lots of horrible food is starting to take its toll on my body, but poppy and I made up a bunch of salads and lunches for this week, so I think I'll do better); went over to my brother's to hang out with some buddies on Saturday; went over to my parents on Sunday to celebrate Mother's Day and visit with my grandparents who are in from New Mexico; and then went over to poppy's parents later that day to visit and to further celebrate Mother's Day (as well as start some laundry and shred some old papers).
- Over the weekend I also watched a pretty good amount of Chushingura, the three and a half hour samurai epic I received from Netflix a month or so ago and have been putting off watching since then. I'll probably finish it tonight. The description on the sleeve mentions that the film is "deliberately paced," and boy is it ever. Good God is it slow. It's pretty good, too, but still. Btw, I didn't see his name in the credits or on the IMDB page there (which is woefully lacking in information, as the site often is when it comes to foreign films), but I'm almost certain my man Toshiro Mifune is in the movie. I thought I'd read that he was, and there's this one guy in it who totally looks like him. Am I going crazy here?
Don't answer that.
