Film List |
by Fëanor |
Thanks to poppy for letting me know about Time's list of the all-time 100 best movies. The guys who put it together point out that the list involved a lot of compromise, and is not meant to be taken too seriously. Me, I always enjoy lists of this sort, and wrangling over them.
Complaints:- Why in God's name would you include The Fly from 1986, but not the obviously superior The Fly from 1958?
- I can't say I'm surprised to see films like The 400 Blows, Wings of Desire, and Barry Lyndon on here; they're always getting critical recognition. But I still don't understand why. I find them utterly dull and painful and pointless. Barry Lyndon is one of Kubrick's few failures, and oh, how I despise Wim Wenders and the French New Wave.
- Where the hell is Vertigo? Seriously.
Praise:- The Man With a Camera is a great choice. That's an amazing little film, and one I don't hear enough about.
- Drunken Master II?? Cool!
- I wish there were more Kurosawa films on here, but at least there's Ikiru, which is probably his best, among his many masterpieces.
- I wish there were more Coen brothers films on here, but at least there's Miller's Crossing, which is definitely one of their best, among their many masterpieces.
- Thank you for including Leone's fantastically excellent Western epic Once Upon a Time in the West, and not including Leone's wretched, disgusting, hateful modern epic Once Upon a Time in America.
Random comment: - Bande a part? I wonder if that's where Tarantino got the name of his production company (A Band Apart) from. Huh. Turns out it is.
