Items of DOOM
 by Fëanor

  • Fear the immense power of the gem sweater! Thanks go to Sarcasmo for this horrifyingly hilarious link.

  • Remember when I posted about the live-action Transformers movie? And David said they're probably getting Nic Cage for Optimus Prime? Turns out, no, it's George Clooney. You may gasp in horror, but I think it's a good idea! I like Clooney, and his voice seems appropriate for the character. Anyways, I'll continue keeping a hopeful eye on this project...

  • In other movie news, sounds like they might make a Batman vs. Superman movie! Sure, so far this is little more than a rumor, but I think Mr. Campea makes a good point in his post here when he says this film will almost certainly be made, if for no other reason than the enormous amounts of money that it would inevitably generate.

I'll certainly be there with my 10 bucks--or however much movies will cost by the time this one finally comes out. The two titans of the superhero world, battling it out for supremacy? How could I miss that?

  • Looks like Brett Ratner will be directing X-Men 3. I'm not sure how I feel about this--by which I mean, of course, that I'm not too happy about it. Ratner's Rush Hour movies were fun, but his Red Dragon was just kind of ridiculous. I wasn't thinking much about the future of the X-Men franchise, as I wasn't too impressed with X-Men 2 (I thought it was kind of dumb and over-the-top), but I wouldn't have picked Ratner to take it over. I would have hoped Bryan Singer could have pulled it together and somehow made an X-Men film on par with his The Usual Suspects. If they had to hand the franchise over to somebody else (and I guess they did have to, since Singer is slated to make Superman Returns now), I would have preferred a more talented, proven, and consistent director than Ratner. Ah, well.

  • I was thinking a while ago about what it would be like if Watergate happened again now, with the big W at the center of the conspiracy instead of Tricky Dick, and I decided that nobody would really care, and that W would get quietly away with it. Tom Tomorrow makes a similar thought experiment and comes to a similar conclusion in today's spot-on This Modern World (a subscription or a free pass to Salon will be required to view this link; sorry).
