This is progress?
 by Fëanor

  • I love this - White House: Deficit Plummeting to $333B. Yes, it's "plummeted" all the way down to the rock-bottom number THREE HUNDRED THIRTY-THREE BILLION DOLLARS!!! WTF? How did this become a good amount for us to be in debt? Bush also neatly takes all the praise for the deficit going down, and then turns all the blame for anything going wrong on Congress:
Bush said the improving deficit picture vindicated his stewardship of the economy and budget.

"These numbers indicate that we're going to cut the deficit in half faster than the year 2009 so long as Congress holds the line on spending," Bush said following a Cabinet meeting.
Um, okay, prick. Now let's leave the fantasy land you live in and come back to reality:
Despite the improvement, the deficit picture remains far worse than when Bush took office in 2001, when both White House and congressional forecasters projected cumulative surpluses of $5.6 trillion over the subsequent decade. Then, it forecast a surplus for this year of $269 billion.

    *snip*

"We should not be lulled into complacency," said Rep. John M. Spratt Jr., D-S.C. "Over the last three years, the Bush administration has posted the three worst deficits in history and though the deficit for 2005 has improved, it remains among the largest on record."
  • Usually articles about the latest technological innovation--even the ones about human-monkeys, or the ones about zombie dogs and remote killer robots that scare poor Sarcasmo so--just amaze and excite me, and make me proud of what we as humans can accomplish. But this story freaks out even me. We're talking about laser guns and lightning generators and blinding weapons. Yeah, a lot of these things could save a lot of lives and protect us against terrorists, and that's great. But then you read something like this:
A separate branch of directed-energy research involves bigger, badder beams: lasers that could obliterate targets tens of miles away from ships or planes. Such a strike would be so surgical that, as some designers put it at a recent conference here, the military could plausibly deny responsibility.
Gack! That's how the designers are selling the things?! SCARY! This part about a weapon called StunStrike isn't much better:
Basically, it fires a bolt of lightning. It can be tuned to blow up explosives, possibly to stop vehicles and certainly to buzz people....

Bitar, who is of Arab descent, believes StunStrike would be particularly intimidating in the Middle East because, he contends, people there are especially afraid of lightning.

At present, StunStrike is a 20-foot tower that can zap things up to 28 feet away. The next step is to shrink it so it could be wielded by troops and used in civilian locales like airplane cabins or building entrances.
Yeah, I think I saw that 20-foot tower shooting lightning bolts in a video game I played a while ago. Not to mention the hand-held version. Luckily or unluckily, depending on how you look at it, for now these weapons will remain in the domain of video games, as they are not ready for mass production and regular use by soldiers. Still, the day is coming soon, and I am officially frightened.

Btw, does anybody else find that line about how Middle Eastern people are afraid of lightning a little disturbing? The article tries to take the edge off of it by mentioning it was said by a man of Arab descent, but still, kind of creepy.
