Ups and Downs
 by Fëanor

The site was down today. Don't know why. Suck.

Anyway, we're back, and here's the usual bulleted list:

  • I've listened to both discs of the Foo Fighters' latest album, In Your Honor, a number of times now, and I think I've decided that if it's not their best album yet, it's certainly one of the best. I also find myself getting interested in Weezer again, so this news about them touring together is quite welcome. That's a show poppy and I could both enjoy!

  • Random funny. She's got a whole archive of re-worded comics there, but this one is my favorite.

  • "Futurama," I sincerely believe, will be recognized one day as one of the truly great comedy shows of all time. So I'm looking forward to the movie.

  • More ninja turtles?! This time "grittier"? Well...okay. I did used to like the comic, and I'd like to see them make a decent movie out of it. But I just don't see how you can make anything but a bad film about a bunch of mutated turtles that learn ninja fighting in order to fight crime.

  • Crom! Conan returns. I'd check that out. I'm not sure anybody could top the original Conan the Barbarian, though. So much great talent went into that movie--the Arnold, Max von Sydow, James Earl Jones, John Milius. Everything just happened to come together to make it work. They'd have to get really lucky again to make a decent Conan movie. But I'm always up for a fantasy epic with swords and such.

  • The new Harry Potter is sitting on our kitchen table, but neither of us have read it yet. I got a few pages into the first chapter, but I haven't sat down with it seriously, as poppy wants it first. I may have to steal it and speed-read it soon, though. I'm aching to know what happens, and I'm desperately afraid somebody's going to spoil it for me.

  • Funny story: A number of appliances in our condo here are quite old--probably from when the place was originally built, about 17 years ago. We had to replace the dryer almost immediately because, well, it didn't actually dry things anymore. So we have a really antique looking dishwasher, too. When we turned it on for the first time, I expected it to be pretty loud, but poppy and I were both kind of horrified by the incredible grinding and clacking noises that came out of the thing while it was running. But we figured that was just the way the old units are, what can we do? Maybe we'll be able to afford to replace it soon, hopefully before it totally craps out.

So then one day I'm taking the dishes out, and I look inside, and I see something in there. A lot of times, with our old dishwasher, we'd put plastic containers in there and they'd end up flying all around and getting stuck under the sort of propeller thingie. So I figure it's probably one of those and I go to get it out. Turns out it's two halves of a big plastic spoon that must have snapped apart in there. And hey, there's another spoon, this one long and metal! And there's some plastic bits, too, I don't know what those are...

I though I might pull a license plate out of there next.

Funny part is, none of this stuff belonged to us. Maybe it belonged to the guy who lived here before us, but who knows how long it's been in there?

Anyway, the dishwasher runs a bit quieter than it used to these days.
