Also, poppy and I watched Porco Rosso last night on DVD, and it was good. This is Hayao Miyazaki's film about a pilot/bountyhunter in the 1930s who fights pirates while trying to avoid the Italian fascist police. Oh, and he's also been cursed into looking like a pig for some reason. The art is fantastically beautiful, as always, and it's a fun story with lovable characters and some neat adventure and such. It's a little weak and watery for Miyazaki, though. Not much substance, and not much that's really exciting. It's not that it's bad, it's just not as great as some of Miyazaki's other work. That flashback scene where our hero watches all the lost pilots float up into the sky, though--that's absolutely amazing. The movie's worth it for that sequence alone. |
