Welcome to the Jungle
 by Fëanor

  • First, I have three wonderful items recycled from Sarcasmo's Corner today:

    • A blooper reel (in Quicktime .mov format) from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," featuring some "adult language," as they say. My favorite part is the look on Jonathan Frakes's face at the end of the second to last scene, after Marina Sirtis messes up.

    • Also in the genre of sci fi mistakes is this collection of screenshots of very poorly done subtitles for a copy of Revenge of the Sith. Apparently they were translated into Chinese and then back into English, and the results are at times stunningly meaningless, and at other times strangely appropriate. I particularly like that the Jedi Council became the Presbyterian Church, but I'm disappointed that my Presbyterian grandparents never taught me the Jedi mind trick.

    • Seeing as how I just played in a nice six-hour roleplaying session on Sunday afternoon/evening, this handy RPG flowchart seemed particularly appropriate and funny to me. Admittedly, lately in our campaign we've done very little killing and looting, but still. I'm sure we'll get back to it eventually. At least, I hope we do. I'm not good at this whole human interaction thing in real life, and I seem to be even worse at it in an RPG. Especially when I'm playing under the influence of very little sleep and one too many beers.

  • The director of the upcoming Harry Potter film, Mike Newell, had some comments about children and about his vision for the future direction of the franchise that were very encouraging to me. Basically it sounds like he wants to avoid the "goody-two-shoes feel" and angle more toward the blood and the violence and the darkness which he knows children love. Sweet! This is a particularly appropriate attitude to take for Goblet of Fire, which is one of the darker of the books, so I'm looking forward to the movie. I'm sad to say I haven't really loved any of the Potter movies so far, although I think they've been getting better as they've gone along. There just seems to be some element that's in the books that the movies are missing; some indefinable flavor or spirit that just hasn't been carried over successfully yet.

  • I was going to say something about Bush's forced appointment of Bolton as ambassador to the UN, but I'm not coming up with much. Basically, I keep thinking of two things: that guy talking about Bolton in the Onion's "What Do You Think?" column (the page isn't up anymore, but I think he said something like, "This is like appointing a fish to ride a bicycle which he hates and wishes to destroy."), and Emperor Palpatine slowly taking control of the Republic. Thinking about these things isn't helping me to come to any wise conclusion, though, except the usual one that I come to in circumstances such as these: Bush is a stupid prick.
