Bananas of Death
 by Fëanor

  • I've got to agree with Mr. Brunton at The Movie Blog again, this time on his comments about an upcoming movie about last year's tsunami disaster. Now admittedly this is a Hollywood film made by Americans, but still, must we adopt this as our tragedy and our triumph over adversity? The tsunami was not our story. Why can't we admit that and make the movie about the people who actually live in Indonesia and the surrounding area?

Our reporters tend to be guilty of this, too. American news reports about foreign tragedies always center on any Americans who might have been involved. On one level, this makes sense; obviously, we live in America, and we care about our own. But we shouldn't focus on the troubles of the dozen or so Americans who happened to be there to the point that we fail to even mention the thousands of non-Americans who are really at the center of the story.

  • Speaking of The Movie Blog, here's a post on Charlie's Angels 3, the existence of which is unfortunately looking more likely every day. I generally agree with what Brunton says here again, except for the fact that I didn't even like the first Charlie's Angels, and I think that the third one will probably do fine business, even without the excellent title he suggests (that being Charlie's Angels 3: Hot Lesbian Love; that would at least be worth a rental).

But then again, the American public has been surprising me lately by not going to mindless action films like Stealth and The Island, so who knows, maybe they'll give Charlie's Angels 3 a pass, too. I refuse, however, to believe that this trend means that the American public is actually getting smarter or acquiring better taste, because there's plenty of evidence to counter those hypotheses (for just two examples, look at who's still in the White House, and how many "reality" shows are still on TV). It probably just means we're getting even lazier and staying home to surf the internet, play video games, watch TV, and wait for the inevitable DVD.

  • Yagathai linked to a couple of great angry political posts on Kung Fu Monkey today. One of them sounded familiar, so I think I must have seen bits of it posted somewhere else recently. Anyway, they're an excellent read and you should check them out.

  • "Mayor of Baghdad Is Deposed; Insurgents Kill 4 U.S. Troops" - It's good to know things are going so well in Iraq! Yeah, we'll have that insurgency out of there any day now! (Got to this article via Salon, btw.)

  • From dje2004, we learn the dangers of letting video games make us forget to do various chores, like eating and drinking and sleeping. Thanks to poppy for sending this article my way, too--were you thinking of how late I stayed up playing Paper Mario last night?

Well, I'd never forget to eat and drink, myself. I like to do those things too much--about as much as I like to play video games, actually. Sleeping, now. I wish I didn't have to sleep. I waste so much time sleeping.

  • I'm thinking of writing a web app (maybe an applet that parses text files, or just a php page that accesses some new tables in my database) to randomly generate phrases of this construction: "[plural noun] of [gerund or singular noun]." And then every once in a while, just to mix it up, a phrase like this: "[adjective] [plural noun]." I'm getting tired of making up meaningless titles for my blog posts anymore.

  • Why is it that I find it nearly impossible to make myself write a little movie review for my film festival diary, but I have no problem whatsoever putting together a blog post that's longer than Moby Dick? Gah.
