Nuggets of Pure Evil
 by Fëanor

  • Found the following quiz on Yagathai's journal (his result was far more accurate than mine, but I don't mind; this is quite complimentary):
    The Second Doctor
You are the Second Doctor: Affable, impish, and
fond of simple pleasures as well as simple
pranks. Your mischievous exterior camouflages a
powerful mind and a great deal of courage.
Although you care nothing for appearances, you
place a high value on the bonds of true andlasting friendship.

Which Incarnation of the Doctor Are You?
    brought to you by Quizilla

  • This DVD set, Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1894-1941, sounds pretty awesome to me. I might have to pick it up. Maya Deren started making films right after 1941, though, so I don't know if I'll recognize much that's on there...

  • This seems particularly appropriate, since we're having a double feature at our movie night tonight: Some awesome ideas for themed double feature movie nights from Cinematical. I love the accompanying picture, and the connection they've made between Willy Wonka and Seven.

I'm going to ask the same question Cinematical does: Can anybody think of any other cool double feature ideas? How about the Bruce Willis and numbers double feature--The Fifth Element and The Sixth Sense? Or the influences double feature--The Hidden Fortress and Star Wars. Or the obvious--CHUD and Hud.

I can't think of anymore right now, but I'm sure I will later.

  • There's a cool article on the Classic Gaming Expo at the Wired website. Be sure to check out the photos. They're kicking it old school at the Expo. I have to admit to having a soft spot for the classic gaming myself--in fact, I just picked up a copy of Midway Arcade Treasures for my GameCube--but man, those old games are frigging hard! Seriously, I think newer games, which are admittedly more complex in certain ways, are in general far easier than classic arcade games. PaperBoy, Joust, Defender, Robotron 2084--those games are impossible! Defeating Diablo is a cakewalk compared to trying to get past the first couple levels of Defender. Of course, part of the issue is that the older games I'm talking about here were designed for the arcade, and thus had to be difficult so that folks wouldn't be able to play them for very long without having to pump more money into them.

Being able to increase your health by just pressing a button instead of inserting more coins sure makes Gauntlet a lot easier. The problem is, it also makes me feel like I'm cheating...
