Happy Birthday to Us!
 by Fëanor

Today, our blog is one year old. Yay! We were a little late getting on the blog bandwagon, but we've stuck around for a while, and we're still going strong. To prove it, here's another post full of pointless information!
  • Apparently, the Star Trek franchise has gotten to that part in its life--which every franchise eventually reaches if it goes on long enough--where it has to do a prequel. Thus, Star Trek: The Beginning. I'm of two minds about this. The last couple Star Trek movies have been terrible, so I think it might be good to just sort of start over with completely different characters and a totally different story. However, I did really like the "TNG" crew, and even though I liked a good portion of the "Star Trek: Enterprise" series, the later episodes were pretty awful. If this is just going to be Enterprise: The Movie (and hopefully it won't be; it sounds like they really may be trying to take the franchise into new territory, which is cool)...well, I'm still going to see it, natch, but I'll feel a bit queasy about it.

  • A local radio station, 88.5 WXPN, is doing their yearly 885 all time greatest albums list, and you can vote by sending in your top ten favorite albums (voting also enters you into a contest, but that was secondary for me). Being a person who is obsessed with music and lists of things, I had to get in on this, so earlier today I put together my list and submitted it. Here it is, available for your praise and/or ridicule, in order from best to worst (although I didn't know it had to be in order at first, so I put that together kind of last minute and rather arbitrarily, and I'm not sure I'm happy with it):

    1. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I

    2. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

    3. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme

    4. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks

    5. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

    6. Pink Floyd - The Wall

    7. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

    8. The Who - Quadrophenia

    9. Radiohead - OK Computer

    10. Genesis - Nursery Cryme

A funny thing I realized about this list: I haven't listened to any of these albums all the way through for a long time. I guess when I'm listening to music, although I do go back to old favorites relatively often, I mostly tend to want to hear newer stuff.

Anyway, Poppy and I had an interesting discussion about what we would put on our lists, and what "greatest albums" really means. Poppy felt you should probably include albums that were really important and influential, even if you don't really like them very much yourself. As an example, she mentioned Nirvana's Nevermind--not one of her favorite albums, but it was the definitive CD of the '90s.

What do you guys think? What would your list be? (Btw, be aware that if you want to submit a list to XPN, the deadline is coming up soon--it's September 5th, I think.)

  • And finally, a quiz, via vis_major. I thought I'd be more of a geek (and the percentages seem to suggest that I am), but whatever:

    Modern, Cool Nerd
    69 % Nerd, 78% Geek, 47% Dork
For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgeable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

    Congratulations!

Also, you might want to check out some of my other tests if you're interested in either of the following:
