Pickled Beets
 by Fëanor

  • Crud! Just when I was all settled on which of the next generation video game consoles to buy (that being--as I'm sure you already know if you've read any of my recent posts--the PS3, because it sounds like it's going to be pretty impressive and powerful, and it will allow me to play all those PS2 and PS1 games I missed the first time around), Nintendo finally unveils the Revolution controllers, and they sound awesome. That link is to a Wired News story about the controllers; accompanying the story are pictures of them, and of the Revolution itself--check 'em out. I don't know about you, but this was the first time I'd gotten a chance to see either the console or the controllers, and I'm impressed. The controllers are so sleek and stylish, they look like they should be called iWands or something. The Revolution console also seems to be following the Apple design philosophy with its simple, angular shape, shiny white paint job, and stripped-down case.

As for functionality: The controllers apparently work sort of like little light guns, in that the system is able to detect how they're moving and what they're pointing at on the TV screen, and then react accordingly. There's also a traditional directional pad on the thing, and an optional joystick add-on (which connects to the main controller via a wire and is held in the other hand to form a "nunchuck controller"), but whatever--motion detection! There are buttons on it, too, of course, in easy reach of the thumb, and then a trigger button underneath for your index finger. The thing just looks so intuitive and comfortable. And so cool. Damn it! We really need to win that lottery...

  • If there's one thing I hate, it's those horrible bumper stickers/decals that depict Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbes) peeing on things. They're just pointless and disgusting and nasty and I hate them.

Despite that, I found this series of repetitions of that image (link courtesy Sarcasmo's Corner)--used in this case to summarize great works of literature--to be endlessly hilarious. Even though each one is just the same joke over again, they are still somehow each funny in their own way. At least, I thought they were. Check them out yourself and see what you think.

  • For more childish, gross humor that I find inexplicably funny, I point you toward today's Penny Arcade.

  • And now for some Star Wars links: first, some velvet Yodas (courtesy Cinematical and Sarcasmo's Corner), and second, step-by-step illustrated instructions for transforming two Paris Metro tickets into an X-wing fighter (courtesy kds).

  • Cinematical actually posted this a while ago, but I happened to come across it again this morning and decided it was really worth linking to: a fan of the Blues Brothers has created a Google map of pretty much every location in the film. Most of the virtual pushpins come with pictures and expository captions. I like the Blues Brothers, but what mainly impresses me about this page is the amount of time, research, and care that was taken in creating it.

  • Big thanks to The Movie Blog (despite the perpetually, maddeningly poor grammar and spelling in all of their posts--gah!) for pointing me toward this wonderful clip from the upcoming Wallace and Gromit movie, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. This charmingly funny scene, with its wonderfully beautiful and detailed animation, is Nick Park at his usual best. I can't wait to see the film.
