Ravings and Gibberings
 by Fëanor

  • Yesterday, my Mom drove poppy to the doctor's, and brought dinner, birthday cake, and birthday presents for us both. She rocks. Thanks, Mom; I love you!

  • Cinematical has recently posted a pretty excellent review of Once Upon a Time in the West. Check it out, then check out the film. It's one of my favorites.

  • Speaking of Cinematical, why do they keep posting about these cool things that are too far away for me to get to?! Now they're talking about something called the Fantastic Fest, a film festival in Austin that concentrates on science fiction, horror, and animation. Argh! That's a list of all my favorite genres!

  • Recently, I posted a news item about the re-adaptation of I am Legend that's in production. Well, apparently there's also a re-adaptation of Henry James's Turn of the Screw in the works (link via The Movie Blog). Of course, it will be a "contemporary take" on the story.

Mostly this idea makes me feel ill. I'm not really a big fan of the book; it definitely has its moments, but it kind of goes too far and not far enough both at the same time. And it is very dated. So maybe a contemporary take is what it needs to connect with modern audiences. And I always like a good ghost story, or a story that plays with what's real and what's not. So I guess I could see how this could turn out good. But most likely it will suck.

  • I'm more optimistic about this: Harrison Ford is going to play Colonel Everton Conger, the guy who led the manhunt for President Lincoln's assassin. The movie is called Manhunt, and it sounds like a tense historical political action thriller. Sweet!

  • Some people hate giant exterior art installations, like Christo's wrapped buildings and his gates in Central Park, but I think they're fantastic. Art is very much about taking reality and forcing us to look at it in a different way, and thus make us see something important about it and about ourselves. Work like this takes art out of the museum and drags it out into the real world, changing that very world itself. I hesitate to use the word "magical," because it sounds corny, but it's the word I can't help thinking of when I want to describe this kind of work.

Anyway, all of that is just to explain why I love this giant pink bunny on a mountainside (link via kds), and this shark sticking out of a house (link via that other link).

  • The Movie Blog brings us some tantalizing hints about Tarantino's next couple of projects. Even if he has yet to top his first film, the amazing and eminently quotable (though not in mixed company) Pulp Fiction, he's still an amazing talent and I'll definitely be near the front of the line for his next film--which looks to be Death Proof, itself only one half of Grind House, a sort of mini-anthology horror film whose other half (Planet Terror) will be made by Tarantino's pal, Robert Rodriguez. I posted about this movie with great enthusiasm when news of it first leaked my way, and I'm still quite excited about it. (Btw, the article also mentions Tarantino's long-awaited WWII flick and an upcoming sequel to Kill Bill, and I'm excited about them, too, but they sound like they're still pretty far off, and anyway Grind House is still the project I'm most interested in.)

  • Via Yagathai:
    You Are A: Groundhog!
groundhogGroundhogs are cuddly-looking and timid mammals that eat mostly grass, seeds, and other vegetation. As a groundhog you will rarely stray far from your burrow and will run in the face of danger, but you will defend their home fiercely from predators. Groundhogs are even given their own holiday in the US, during which a groundhog is said to predict how long winter weather will last!
You were almost a: Duckling or a Turtle
You are least like a: Squirrel or a Pony
