Deep Hurting

  • Happy Halloween, my friends! Check out Sarcasmo's excellent pictures from TrackerNeil's excellent Halloween party of Saturday night. I'm the one in the suit. I think this is my favorite picture.

  • Interesting news from Neil Gaiman on Beowulf. I don't think I even knew he was working on that project. Cool!

  • This video (via Joystiq) about Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and its new combat system is awesome. Did you see him swing the thing around and cut those guys in half? And then grab that one guy and twist his head off? Sweet.

  • Somebody called the Media Data Company actually went to the trouble of counting all the "violent incidents" in 100 recent horror movies. Sadly, the entire list does not appear to be online, but the winner for most violence is (kind of surprisingly, to me anyway) Freddy vs. Jason. I didn't remember it being all that bad when I saw it in the theater. I do remember, however, there being a little kid sitting nearby who was cheering Jason on, and exhorting him to kill more teens, and faster. That was way more disturbing than the movie itself.

  • Mole Man? Are you kidding me?

  • This movie Brick looks fantastic. Just check out the trailer, via The Movie Blog. It looks like kind of a high school film noir murder mystery, and I know that doesn't sound that cool, but...just watch the trailer. Wow.

  • This is a neat idea. A photojournalist for BBC News has compared and contrasted online gamers' real selves and their virtual selves in text and pictures.

  • Cinematical has posted horror films in haiku form for Halloween. It's a great idea, but I don't think these came out as well as they could have. I'm going to have to think about this and see if I can come up with one or two of my own...

    How about this for Phantasm?

    A very tall man;
    a shimmering silver ball;
    a gout of red blood.

  • A number of weeks ago, I downloaded the demo for Indigo Prophecy. The other night, I installed it. And last night, I finally played it! It was pretty cool. I was disappointed that there was so little available in the demo; if there had been more, I totally would have kept playing. The thought of actually paying to play it further, however, kind of turns me off. Plus, Peccable tells me it gets lame near the end. And while he does tend to be a harsher judge of such things than I...well, I just can't get involved in another video game right now!

  • After Indigo Prophecy, I picked up KotOR 2 again and made a bit more progress in that. That's a good game, but it can be dull and unimaginative sometimes. Last night, I spent pretty much all of my time running back and forth between a few screens, talking to the same people over and over again until they told me new things or gave me new items so I could advance the story. I guess that's pretty much what RPGs are, when you boil them down, but usually you get more of a candy coating. This was pretty much three rooms, five characters, and a lame murder mystery. Yawn.

    Which is not to say I'm going to stop playing. They had me at hello.

  • Speaking of Star Wars games, Battlefront 2 looks pretty awesome. Maybe I should get my hands on a copy of Battlefront 1 first, though.

  • The other day, poppy and I heard the Talking Heads' excellent song "Life During Wartime" on the radio, and something about the goofy way I was singing along made me think how cool it would be if Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were to cover the song. Cave's vocals and the hard, creepy, old-fashioned rock sound of the Seeds would give the song even more of a sense of menace and unease and danger than it already has.

    And that thought inspired me to ask you all: What are some dream covers of yours? And since we're just imagining here, feel free to pick impossible covers - like Elvis doing Radiohead or something.
