Repeats, Rejects, and Reimaginings
 by Fëanor

  • I love Shakespeare, and Hamlet is probably one of my favorite works of fiction of all time. I'm also always fascinated by covers, updates, remakes, those kinds of things. So this film Texas Lullaby which is - you guessed it! - an updated version of Hamlet set in the Lone Star State, is, you might say, of interest to me. Better yet, it's going to star Bruce Willis in the role of Hamlet's father (renamed Cletus here - I kid you not), John Malkovich in the Claudius part (Sherriff Tanner Telmah), and Ellen Barkin as the Gertrude character (no updated Texan name for her yet, I guess). Hamlet is going to be called Adair, but there's no word yet on who will play him. This should be...interesting.

  • Um, this is weird. Somebody noticed that at a particular point in one of the many versions of Dance Dance Revolution, there's a repeated image in the background of pigs' heads with little word bubbles next to them saying, "KILL." Joystiq has a picture and everything. WTF?! Whose idea was that? Shouldn't designers be trying to dispel* the myth that videogames teach their players to kill people?

  • Hey, there's going to be a Killer7 comic book. Cool.

  • Kenneth Branagh is making a movie of The Magic Flute, and Stephen Fry is writing the libretto. Crazy.

  • Apparently, at a concert about a year ago, the Beastie Boys handed out video cameras to their fans and had them film the performance. Then one of the Boys (Adam Yauch, to be exact) cut the footage together into a movie, and now that movie has been picked up for distribution and should appear in theaters next Spring as Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That. Although, as Cinematical points out, they will probably have to edit that title slightly for posters and marquees. Anyway, Beastie Boys movie!

  • Mrs. Doubtfire 2...and 3??!! Please, no. Someone make it stop.

  • Someone in the comments section of this article made the same connection I did, but Ssslither isn't quite the same as Snakes on a Plane. It's killer mutant eels in a swamp! Believe it or not, fighting the eels will be a tough, smart woman character and an overzealous ex-marine with whom she is constantly arguing - but there's also a romantic subplot, so I bet they'll occasionally stop fighting long enough to make out. Oh, and of course, there will also be a few wacky comedy relief characters.

I'm not sure whether to cheer or vomit.

  • That Superman 2 director's cut I posted about a while ago is apparently finally making its way out of the realm of fiction and fantasy and into the realm of reality. But is there a way to take existing and unused footage and somehow put together a non-campy version of Superman 2? And if there was, would that even be a good thing? I'll definitely be curious to see.

  • In case you get into an argument with somebody about which of the current- or next-gen videogame consoles is the best one (and come on, let's face it, one of these days you will), Joystiq has helpfully compiled insulting names for all the game-playing machines out there, from the Nintendo LameCube to the Sony GayStation 3. Just to keep the discussion civil and mature, you understand.

  • The indie tits are back, and cutting it up as usual! Oh, those birds! I just don't know.

  • In Eagles news, son of a bitch! Now T.O. is saying he's out for the next few games, supposedly because of an ankle injury, but is he just pouting? Either way, the damn season's over for them, it seems like to me. This sucks.

  • You can get your DNA put into a tree that will grow over your grave. They can call it a "Me Tree!" Seriously, though, that's a little creepy.

* Had to look up the spelling on that one. That's a weird word.
