Crackers and Parsecs
 by Fëanor

  • Yes, okay, the trailer for Firewall (via The Movie Blog) makes it look pretty corny and cliche. Harrison Ford's family has been taken hostage, and the criminals want him to help them break into the bank he built the security system for. But of course, he decides to fight back.

Still, it also looks pretty cool. Heist movies are fun, these are good actors, and it looks like there's plenty of action. I'd see it.

  • Looks like the moral and ethical and philosophical questions raised by Kim Stanley Robinson in his Mars trilogy are going to start being real and immediate problems pretty soon. Crazy.

I think we seriously need to find out if there's any indigenous life on Mars first before we start polluting it with our own organisms. But that's just my opinion.

  • Apparently Mario Kart DS is a really cool game. Man, they keep tempting me to buy more consoles and hand-held systems! Anyway, I really brought this up so I could show you this link of a promotional event at a McDonalds; apparently Nintendo and the Golden Arches are working together to offer free Wi-Fi access for DS users. The point is, those pictures of Mario and Ronald palling around, along with the snarky captions by Joystiq, are priceless.

  • De Niro as a retired mafia hitman running a bait shop who gets back in the business when he learns he's been targeted for a hit himself? Sure it sounds dumb and unimaginative, like Firewall. But, just like Firewall, I am strangely attracted to it anyway. I could see it maybe working, if the right people are involved.

  • Wow, I hadn't even heard about this before: apparently there was a new Sinbad movie in the works, to be directed by Rob Cohen (maker of dumb action movies like Stealth and such - agh), and to star Keanu Reeves (woah). Even though I love Sinbad and would be curious to see a new movie, I'm kind of glad this project is now dead in the water. I mean, seriously, Cohen and Reeves? Could they have come up with a worse combination? Well, okay, they could have. Like, say, Christopher Columbus and Martin Lawrence. But still, Reeves and Cohen is pretty bad.

  • Ah, Guillermo del Toro is at it again with another Spanish fantasy horror film with a young kid as the main character. It's called Pan's Labyrinth and it's about a young girl who retreats into an imaginary world in an attempt to escape the harsh realities of Franco's Spain. No word on whether David Bowie's in it, but we can always hope. Anyway, here are some awesome photos from it, via Cinematical.
