Phrenology and Demonology
 by Fëanor

  • Really the entire thing is a low point of the human experience, but Cinematical has picked out the seven lowest points of the Star Wars Christmas Special. These are the bits to prepare yourself for when you come to our place on New Years, as you better believe we'll be watching this baby. I'm not sure which is the most awful to endure - Bea Arthur singing a really awful song to a bunch of really poorly made-up "aliens" in the cantina, or Chewbacca's grandfather watching what is essentially holographic Wookiee porn. *shiver*

  • Poppy keeps bugging me about getting a tattoo. What would you think about one of these, dear? That's right, they're super-geeky tattoos, and include famous equations, characters from Zelda games, and graphics from other great 8-bit classics! Nice! (Via Joystiq)

  • Well, the year isn't quite over yet, but AFI has already come out with the ten best films of 2005 (via Cinematical). They are as follows, and I quote (in no particular order):

    1. Brokeback Mountain

    2. King Kong

    3. Capote

    4. Good Night, and Good Luck

    5. The Squid and the Whale

    6. The 40 Year Old Virgin (!!)

    7. Crash

    8. A History of Violence

    9. Munich

    10. Syriana

I'm sad to say I haven't seen a single one of these, but I've been planning to see numbers 2, 4, and 7-10 for quite some time, so one of these days...

Oh, and btw, AFI also picked the best TV shows, and "Battlestar Galactica" is on that list. Rock.

  • Apparently, early on in the adaptation of Fantastic Four to a movie (around 1995), Michael Chabon tried to get hired to write the screenplay. Here's his pitch, and oh my God does it sound, well, fantastic. I really wish his movie had gotten made. Definitely read the whole post, intro and all; it's great. Chabon imagines the movie taking place in a fantasy comic book world that's sort of like a pure and beautiful version of 1963. Dr. Doom threatens to go back in time and eliminate a key person from the timeline, thus turning the Fantastic Four's world into - horror of horrors - our world. Great stuff. (Via Backwards City)

  • Kung Fu Monkey has the link to the trailer for an intriguing new show that should pop up on Sci Fi Channel some time next year - Eureka. Hmm...it could be good!

  • Okay, I didn't read Lost Garden's entire essay on why convergence is bad, but I like very much Joystiq's summary version. A while back I was trying to articulate why I dislike combination devices, but these guys do a much better job than I ever could.
