Tines and Mines
 by Fëanor

  • Turns out there's all kinds of planet-like objects floating around at the edges of our solar system! And now, one of them is named Buffy. That's, like, awesome.

  • I gave up on "Alias" this season because it was just getting more and more ridiculous and unbelievable and lame, and I was tired of it stringing me along. Frankly, I was in an abusive relationship with it, and it was just time to break it off. Still, I loved the first couple of seasons, and the news that it might come back as a movie is quite welcome to me. There's also apparently the possibility of spin-off shows involving some of the villains, which is slightly less welcome, but also interesting. I was always a fan of Sark, for instance. And Sloane is a pretty interesting fellow...

  • I don't know about you, but I've been enjoying the Spike channel's 008 days of 007 this week. I've been a fan of the Bond films since I was a kid. They're dumb but fun, which makes them a good fit for the Spike channel, actually. Anyway, whenever there's a Bond marathon, I feel very comforted, because I know no matter what, there will be something on TV that I can watch and enjoy. I get a real feeling of nostalgia when I put on a Bond movie, too. And I'm constantly surprised at how complex and labyrinthine the plots are, if you actually pay attention to them (which, thankfully with these films, is entirely optional).

Anyway, all of this was brought to mind for me by a Cinematical news item about a boat show where they're showing off a Boats of Bond exhibit which includes five of the crazy boats that appeared in Bond films. Also, on a particular day during the show, you can show up in costume and thereby get discounts and possibly even win a prize. The show's in NYC right now, but it'll be travelling to Atlanta, Boston, and Atlantic City as well.

  • I've been staying away from Woody Allen's recent work (by which I mean, anything he's done in the past ten years or so), but Cinematical's review of his latest, Match Point, has pretty much convinced me to make an exception. They paint the film as being a sort of follow-up/counter-point to Crimes and Misdemeanors, a film of Allen's which really impressed me. They say it's very philosophical; a kind of deconstruction of a certain type of bored, thoughtless, well-off person with few beliefs or convictions. Sounds fascinating. And they say that looking over Allen's entire oeuvre, Match Point "is one that he'll be remembered for," and that's saying something. I'm mighty intrigued.
